HONG KONG, January 10, 2017 — PCCW Media Group’s Viu was selected as the first and exclusive international OTT video service to present the inaugural Asia’s Best Couple Award at the prestigious KBS Drama Awards 2016 held on December 31. The Awards is to recognize outstanding achievements in Korean dramas in 2016. The programme is now available on Viu.

Viu viewers from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines were a major determination of the Asia’s Best Couple in 2016. KBS honoured Viu’s partnership by inviting Ms. Janice Lee, Managing Director of PCCW Media Group, to present this highly coveted award to Mr. Song Joong Ki and Ms. Song Hye Kyo, the leading cast of the phenomenally popular drama, Descendants of The Sun. The TV series is part of Hallyu which is sweeping over Asia, topping the list of highest viewership for Korean drama series across all markets with Viu in Asia.

Stars and producers competed vehemently to win the coveted awards. KBS Drama Awards traditionally recorded high viewership among Korean TV drama fans and, as in past years, this year’s programme enjoyed the highest viewership at 15.5% (TNMS) among all TV shows simulcast in South Korea at the same timeslot.

“Korean dramas are hugely popular globally and as a leading Korean content provider, Viu continues to champion this popular cultural trend. We will continue to collaborate closely with KBS and other premium Korean broadcasters to deliver top Korean content to K fans in Asia. Viu has made a strong and compelling commitment to KBS by supporting its programmes not just with superior video quality and quick local language versions, but also in the forefront at amplifying K-vibe with strongly localized features, curated content, comprehensive integrated marketing and promotion at numerous touch points of their daily lives be they through social media, PR, etc. to increase the engagement with fans in Asia. We look forward to a continuous close relationship with KBS and we will continue to deliver a captivating and enthralling experience in the year ahead for our viewers,” said Ms. Lee.

“KBS is always keen on bringing our quality programmes to viewers around the world and we thank Viu for broadening our foothold in the hearts and minds of K-content fans in Asia. We find in Viu the perfect platform offering high quality stable streaming and a wide network across Asia,” said Mr Taehyun Lee, Senior Producer, Content Business Department, Korea Broadcasting System.

As a premium Korean content provider in Asia, Viu clinched content agreement with KBS at its launch in late 2015 for their top dramas as well as variety shows, and since then has continued to strengthen and consolidate its relationships with key broadcasters to deliver a wide range of popular Korean content in as fast as 4 hours after Korean telecast with local language subtitle in Asia.

“As we expand across the region, Viu will capitalize on ‘Hallyu’ to captivate K-fans and in the coming year, we look to make our service available in other Asian markets such as Thailand,” said Ms. Lee.
