ICIN, Berlin, 8-11 October 2012

This year’s ICIN conference was essentially about enabling the ‘Internet of Everything’. This playful pun on the ‘Internet of Things’ has been intentional: In the four days of the conference there were selected industry and academe presentations – with intense discussions – on a comprehensive and diversified range of subjects, from the advantages of cloud computing for telecommunications providers, to service enablement, to policy and identity management, to M2M communications (aka the ‘Internet of Things’). As before, this year’s topics covered both technical and business issues.

Day 4, 17 October

The Changing Landscape of Standardization

The ICT industry is built on standards; standards level the playing field, create scale and encourage growth. However, the ICT industry is fast moving, highly fragmented and fiercely competitive.

Day 5, 18 October

Are we really secure?

Are we secure? The short answer is no. On the internet or in the physical world. In fact, the boom in connectivity and globalisation means that we are becoming less secure. This is not the hyperbolic message of a security software vendor, this is the pragmatic and realistic consideration that since technologies are created by people, they are always open to corruption and since security is controlled by humans, users and service providers, there will always be mistakes that lead to security flaws.

Broadband World Forum, Amsterdam, 22-24 October 2012

The Broadband World Forum, held for the first time in the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam, has been hailed a success following an exciting opening day that highlighted how broadband has the ability to transform lives.

The conference and exhibition kicked off with the European Union’s Digital Agenda Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, who took to the stage to call on policy makers to spur network investment as a matter of urgency. Kroes, who is a real thought leader and key driver of the Digital Agenda, said that Europe was at a crossroad in broadband and warned that the continent is slipping behind other regions in terms of broadband availability, which if left unchecked, will have dire economic consequences as more and more business is conducted online. In October, Kroes called on operators to lobby their governments for the release of €9.2 billion from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility, which could go towards broadband infrastructure deployment in underserved areas. At the Broadband World Forum, Kroes echoed this call-out by highlighting that an additional 45 million homes would benefit, as well as the wider economy.

iPads Storm the Boardroom

You could say that 2012 was the year that the iPad got serious. Originally intended as a fun device for consumers, the iPad has grown up and entered the highest echelons of business, including the boardroom. UK tablet sales to corporate buyers outstripped those to consumers in 2012, climbing from 35% of all purchases in Q2 last year to 64% in the same period this year. And iPad sales accounted for 72% of those tablets, up from 56% a year earlier.
