HUBER+SUHNER Group enhances its position in fiber optics by acquiring Cube Optics in Mainz
On 31 October 2014, HUBER+SUHNER acquired the Mainz-based German company Cube Optics AG. Cube Optics develops, produces and sells wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) products and systems based on high-precision injection moulding technology and state-of-the-art fiber optic technology. Compared with competitor products, these solutions offer low space requirements, high quality and excellent performance. WDM products and systems provide a cost-efficient solution for boosting the data transmission rate of fiber optic connectivity and networks.
The portfolio thus ideally complements the existing product range of HUBER+SUHNER, especially in the strategic market segments of data centres and Fiber to the Home. The parties have agreed not to disclose the sales price. The purchase is to be financed entirely from company funds.
Established in 2000, Cube Optics currently employs around 140 people in Mainz. In addition to its headquarters and research centre in Mainz, Cube Optics has at its disposal local sales partners in various markets. In 2013, the company generated net sales of EUR 18.9 million. The company’s core competence consists of significantly extending the performance of existing fiber optic cables.
As Urs Kaufmann, CEO of HUBER+SUHNER, explains, the portfolio of Cube Optics ideally supplements the fiber optics solutions currently offered by HUBER+SUHNER: “As a result of the acquisition of Cube Optics, HUBER+SUHNER is enhancing the already successful position in broadband communication. Our company will gain access to “Free Space Optics” technology, to new customers in the growing field of transceiver production and above all acquire extremely well qualified employees. Synergies will be generated by the global sales network of HUBER+SUHNER and by product combinations. We anticipate a simple integration process characterised by continuity and will continue to rely on the current management team of Cube Optics and on Mainz as a location.”
“The global presence and size of HUBER+SUHNER open up completely new possibilities for us, while offering ideal framework conditions for the future success of our technology”, explains Dr. Thomas Paatzsch, the General Manager of Cube Optics. “I am convinced that Cube Optics and HUBER+SUHNER are perfectly suited in strategic terms, and that the combination will make a crucial contribution to both companies. In addition, I am very confident that the sustainable corporate culture and growth strategy of HUBER+SUHNER will also provide new prospects for our employees.” Cube Optics AG with its headquarters in Mainz, Germany, develops and produces a wide range of ultra-compact optical components and modules designed to meet the high performance requirements of networks. The innovative active and passive optical modules provide new solutions for expanding bandwidth and enable network operators to use high-performance network architectures for large-scale and small-scale applications in existing and new networks.
