A GLOBAL PREMIERE IN POLAND – THE FIRST COMMERCIAL LTE 1800 MODEM IN THE MOBYLAND NETWORK

The first LTE 1800 MHz modem in the world

LTE 1800MHz is the first commercial LTE technology network in a harmonized frequency band of 1800MHz (band 3 according to the 3GPP standard) which was launched in Poland in September 2010 by Mobyland Sp. z o.o.

The fourth generation (4G) network is considerably faster than the other networks being operated in Poland and has minimum relay comparable with that of cable networks and a significantly increased user capacity which can be handled by one sector of a base station. Thanks to its technological advances, a fast and economically profitable transfer of large volume of data is achieved with an optimum use of the frequency.

This cutting-edge network technology required an advanced consumer device (a modem) to be implemented to ensure our clients a possibility of using the benefits of the LTE 1800MHz network built by Mobyland. The majority of leading manufacturers of mobile equipment will not present their LTE products until 2011. Owing to its flexible approach to the project, IPWireless has become our partner. “IPWireless is the only company on the market of modem suppliers which undertook to create a terminal to meet our business objectives and our tight schedule,” says Adam Kuriaoski, a Board member of Mobyland.

IPWireless mobile modem is a USB stick which gives network users mobility, convenient use and a user-friendly operation. Additionally, the modem is equipped with two internal antennas and two antenna connections for an external MIMO antenna. IPWireless USB modem’s parameters are worth highlighting. Today the modem works in the 10MHz band and may be later adjusted to work in the 20MHz band after a remote software update. The data transfer speed allows a data download of up to 73 Mb/s and data upload of up to 25 Mb/s. The entire software required to start and use the device is stored in the modem’s internal memory. The terminal may be used with computers with Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000 and Mac OS systems.

The modem’s construction is based on the newest 3100 and 6200 FourGeeTM chipsets developed by Altair-Semiconductors.

In the opinion of Adam Kuriaoski, “the uniqueness of the IPWireless USB modem consists in the fact that we are the first in the world to have a state-of-the-art network and an LTE 1800 consumer terminal, which allows us to provide wholesale access to broadband internet using the most advanced and most innovative LTE technology. Now our clients will be able to access interactive services which require high capacity.”

The LTE 1800MHz project assumes that at the end of 2010 the number of active stations will reach 700 units and the LTE network will cover over seven million users. The network is planned to be continuously built out to cover most of Poland’s population.

Mobyland’s objective is to develop a wireless telecommunications network based on the most modern fourth generation technologies (LTE) which will replace existing solutions.

Information on the company

Mobyland was established in December 2006 and operates as a limited liability company. Its objective is to develop a wireless telecommunications network based on the newest fourth generation technologies (LTE) which will replace the existing systems and equipment. The build-out of an independent network is possible thanks to radio frequencies held by Mobyland. In November 2007 Mobyland won a tender organized by the President of the Polish Electronic Communications Office and obtained frequency reservations in the 1800 MHz band. Since July 2009 Mobyland is owned by Aero2 Sp. z o.o. At the end of August 2009 the company launched its commercial services. In September 2010 Mobyland launched its LTE 1800 MHz network.
