Software site makes it for Sunderland

SUNDERLAND’S software success stories are being showcased on a new website aimed at boosting awareness of Sunderland as the UK’s foremost IT and technology hub.

Leading city firms Aframe – an online platform that allows video to be shared, searched and stored – and technology business SaleCycle – which provides software that allows companies to re-target customers who abandon their online shopping carts, recovering lost sales and increasing online revenues – are among the stars of the new website which has been launched this month.

The website – www.makeitsunderland.com – which was launched this week, will act as a platform for budding software entrepreneurs and thriving businesses in the sector to find out more about what Sunderland has to offer. It showcases Sunderland’s growing industries the offshore renewable energy, automotive and software sectors – and highlights the city’s reputation as a hotbed of software and technology talent.

Councillor Paul Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “The campaign is a real opportunity for us to generate further interest in Sunderland as a place for software and technology businesses.

“The infrastructure, support services in the form of the region’s Sunderland Software City initiative, and the availability of tailored space specifically designed to meet the needs of enterprises in the sector, is something that really sets Sunderland apart and helps businesses here to thrive. This campaign is a real concerted effort to harness the influence of the software business community we have here, and showcase all that Sunderland has to offer to a whole new audience.”

Sunderland is home to more than 100 software and technology companies, which between them pump some £65million into the city’s economy, creating over 1000 jobs. This is a figure that is expected to grow over the coming months and years, as the newest addition to the city’s software office space, in the form of a £10m flagship software centre scheduled to open later this year, attracts further businesses to Sunderland.

Cllr Watson added: “The defining difference for Sunderland is the championing of the software sector by the City Council and its commitment to a long-term vision of growing a sustainable IT and technology industry. There is a hotbed of talent in Sunderland and with a visionary university on its doorstep – and more in the wider region – and through this campaign, I believe we can really highlight that and help to make the sector an even more important part of the city’s economy in the future.”
