Growing Demand for High-Quality Global Broadcast Solutions in South Africa Leads to Level 3 Vyvx Expansion

– Enables South African Companies Such as Telemedia to Broadcast Video Content Internationally

BROOMFIELD, Colorado, Sept. 11, 2013Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE: LVLT) today announced it has expanded its Vyvx broadcast capabilities into South Africa to meet the growing demand for video content generated in and also delivered to one of Africa’s most populated countries.

Companies in South Africa can now more rapidly transmit live sports, breaking news and other video content to international audiences, enabled by Level 3’s Vyvx Point of Presence (PoP) located in Johannesburg. The new PoP also provides companies in North America, Western Europe and Latin America the opportunity to deliver their broadcast content more readily to South Africa.

“Using Level 3’s expansive African telecommunications and media network, South Africa is well-positioned for growth in the international broadcast sector,” said Mark Taylor, vice president of Media and IP Services at Level 3. “Level 3 is proud to serve as a conduit for faster, more reliable video communications in and out of South Africa.”

The expansion has enabled one of Level 3’s South African broadcast customers, Telemedia, to provide its local broadcast network customers with on-net access to a global network footprint.

“Level 3’s growing broadcast infrastructure and network scalability is helping us expand our business into new markets across the globe,” said Tom Salmon, manager of Data Services at Telemedia. “As South Africa’s leading provider of media broadcast services, Telemedia is committed to giving customers the national and international reach they need, and Level 3 plays a critical role in that delivery.”
