Realising business value from exponential data growth a key challenge for Chinese companies, says CommVault Survey

A single platform is needed to provide end-to-end protection; ease-of-use is the most important factor by CommVault

· Companies across China are struggling to realise the business value of rising unstructured data volumes

· CIOs are looking for end-to-end solutions enabling the protection, management and access of all data from one single platform

CommVault (NASDAQ: CVLT) — Hong Kong — 9 May, 2014– CommVault has today released findings from a new IDC survey and whitepaper entitled, “Driving Smart Data Management,” which shows that companies across the Asia-Pacific region face challenges from rising volumes of unstructured data and protecting information security in the era of mobility. CIOs are looking for end-to-end solutions that enable the protection, management and accessibility of all data from a single platform. Chinese organisations in particular placed the most importance simplicity of use.

Commissioned by CommVault, the IDC “Driving Smart Data Management” whitepaper was based on a survey of more than 500 IT executives across Asia-Pacific including China, Korea, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Singapore from financial services, telecommunications, retail and wholesale, energy and utility industries. Key findings include:

· 72 per cent of the respondents consider the exponential growth and complexity of data to be a top data management challenge.

· 70 per cent of executives said that their financial or operational business areas would be most jeopardised by data loss.

· Across all organisations in the Asia-Pacific region, of the 84 per cent of transactional data currently being captured, only 73 per cent of it will be effectively analysed.

· 38 per cent of all respondents stated a preference for an end-to-end solution that allows protection, management and access of all data from one single platform.

According to Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends Report in 2013, China has the largest number of smartphone subscribers in the world and 75 per cent of Chinese Internet users accessing the web via mobile phones. This is challenging IT’s ability to protect and control sensitive corporate data that is being created on these. The survey findings indicate that in China Specifically:

· 26 per cent of organisations are managing more than 50 TB of data, while 39 per cent of organisations are expecting data to grow by as much as 20-50 per cent in 2014.

· Data is also being stored across a combination of different locations, with 58 per cent of data stored on-premise in databases (this figure is 26 per cent higher than the APAC average), 28 per cent in an on premise data center and 11 per cent is on premise across multiple sites, (but this is under half of the APAC average).

· Chinese companies also had the larger amounts of data residing on PC’s and other end user devices than any other country in APAC

· In China, the most affected sectors would be finance (56), operations (47%), marketing (37%), customer service (31%) sales (30%) and administration (21%), if critical data is lost or accessibility is impacted.

Key challenges Chinese organisations face are growth and complexity of data, lack of scalability as data grows and demand for faster, easier data retrieval. 35 per cent of organisations in China stated that the most important aspect of a backup and recovery solution is to provide end-to-end protection, management and access of all data from a single platform.  Chinese customers also rated ease-of-use as a higher priority for choosing their data management solutions than any other Asia-Pacific country in the survey.

Over 48 per cent of Chinese organisations believe that a solution that can enable them to protect, manage and access all data using a single platform will allow them to

1) Increase protection from data loss;

2) Enable more efficient and reliable disaster recovery; and

3) Improve storage and network optimisation and cost savings.

According to Daniel-Zoe Jimenez, IDC Senior Program Manager of Big Data and Analytics, Data Management, and Enterprise Applications (white paper author), “The real opportunity exists in combining internal sources of data, like customer data, with external sources like social networking and location. This can help organisations gain a holistic view of their customer transactions and circumstances, enabling them to understand preferences, habits, and future requirements — all in context. As an emerging country, China now is becoming more focused on utilising their data to the fullest extent possible, but the lack of skill-sets, optimal tools, and gaps in processes still present challenges.”

Rick Theiler, Vice President, Sales, Asia Pacific theatre for CommVault, stated, “According to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China now has 1.23 billion mobile phone users, which creates unique challenges for IT departments in major Enterprise organisations. Simpana, with its market leading capabilities in managing and securing data created and accessed from mobile devices, is ideally positioned to help Chinese organisations to tackle these problems with our single unified solution to facilitate smart business decisions.”

Asia-Pacific firms that have approached CommVault to solve such challenges in the past six months include the Australian Federal Department of Treasury, Stock Exchange of Thailand, Consolidated Minerals and Comcare. Chinese financial organisations like CITIC, SunLife SunBright Insurance, Fudian Bank, as well market leaders from other sectors including Hai Di Lao and Peking University are also currently enjoying the benefits of Simpana.
