Fujitsu Drives it Home with High Performance Computing Project for Turkey’s Largest Automotive Manufacturer

London, May 21, 2014 – Fujitsu today announces that Tofaş, Turkey’s largest automotive manufacturer, has selected Fujitsu for a High Performance Computing (HPC) project. Fujitsu’s HPC systems will give Tofaş the competitive edge in a demanding marketplace, and in doing so will make a key contribution to the Turkish economy. Fujitsu is at the forefront of the supercomputing space with more than 30 years’ experience in the successful development of High Performance Computing systems and their deployment in mature as well as in emerging and high-growth markets such as Turkey.

The question of what sells, and at what price, is an urgent one for automobile manufacturers. The high cost of materials and the time required to build an automobile means considerable investment for manufacturers. In addition, elements such as color, style and other features can influence the purchase decision of potential buyers. Knowing what those triggers are for customers requires a complex algorithm. Fujitsu’s High Performance Computing systems provide valuable insights and make Tofaş more competitive. The end-to-end, turn-key design of the HPC solution enables easy installation and use by Tofas R&D team.

Tofaş manufactures both passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, producing 400,000 units per year for brands including Fiat, Citroen, Peugeot, Opel and Vauxhall. The company achieved accolades from the World Class Manufacturing organization for its factory in Bursa . The infrastructure created can compete internationally in the field of vehicle development. Tofaş’ R&D center tests vehicle concepts and elements such as style, interior design, suspension, and engine configuration.

With Fujitsu’s HPC solution, comprising FUJITSU PRIMECENTER, PRIMERGY and ETERNUS systems plus consultancy and services, Tofaş’ R&D team can expand and develop the system to meet future needs and to make increasingly complex analyses of different kinds of vehicle models to stay ahead in a competitive market. This is achieved by providing Tofaş with the resources it needs – such as technical, heavy engineering, design and R&D locally, in order to reduce product costs. It also improves operating efficiency as Fujitsu’s HPC systems work hand-in-hand with Tofaş optimized design, tooling and engineering in R&D.

Following a rigorous Request for Proposal (RFP) process, this win is another proofpoint for Fujitsu’s strength in the fast-growing HPC market. Tofaş asked each vendor to run benchmarks with the same input files on their demo system and to provide output files and benchmark reports. The objective was to evaluate the performance of the hardware and software proposed for the HPC systems. Fujitsu’s results were significantly ahead of the closest competitor.

To meet customers’ individual requirements today while being scalable for tomorrow’s growing needs, Fujitsu offers HPC architectures ranging from x86 CELSIUS high-end workstations to x86 PRIMERGY industry-standard servers all the way up to the PRIMEHPC FX10 supercomputer. Considering that hardware is only part of an effective solution, Fujitsu’s HPC offering also includes consulting and integration services.

Hakan Korkmaz, Information and Communication Technologies Director, Tofaş

“We selected Fujitsu for a variety of reasons – not the least of which is the speed and performance of the hardware. Fujitsu was also most knowledgeable about High Performance Computing systems, providing all the information we needed to get started quickly, and with fast response time. Most of all, Fujitsu took the time to analyze our business needs to provide a system design which is scalable for the future and help us stay competitive.”

Cameron McNaught, Executive Vice President, Solutions, Fujitsu

“Tofaş and other forward-looking companies are realizing that High Performance Computing provides great benefits in areas such as R&D. HPC’s enhanced computer processing power and computer-based modeling can speed up development by analyzing multiple sources of big data and customers’ buying behavior to reveal competitive market advantages. We are putting that to work for Tofaş.”

1         Tofaş asked each vendor to run benchmarks with the same input files on its demo system and to provide output files and benchmark reports. The main objective was to evaluate the performance of hardware and software configurations proposed by Fujitsu for High Performance Computing when running a wide range of automotive-specific HPC applications. In conjunction with local partners Fujitsu prepared a benchmark report summarizing the performance increase provided by the new HPC cluster.

Pricing and availability

Fujitsu’s High Performance Computing systems are generally available globally, via Fujitsu and certified HPC partners. For the Tofaş project Fujitsu worked with the local sub-contractor and HPC solution partner Compecta Ltd. Prices vary by specification and country.
