Nevion to receive a Technical and Engineering Emmy® award for JPEG 2000

Recipients honored at a January 8, 2015 event during CES in Las Vegas

NEW YORK, NY, August 13, 2014 – The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has announced that Nevion, a leader in transporting media from the camera to the home, is among ten companies that will receive a Technical and Engineering Emmy® award for its efforts in the standardization and productization of JPEG 2000 (J2K) interoperability.

JPEG 2000 is an image compression standard and coding system that is important to the broadcast industry for real-time video transport over IP networks, because it can provide a suitable compression ratio without image quality loss/degradation – no blocking or tiling and imperceptible artifacts at high bit rates.

“This award is a tremendous honor that not only recognizes Nevion as one of the original pioneers of JPEG 2000 compression technology but also reflects the collaborative efforts of industry leaders in the field,” said Janne T. Morstøl, chief product and development officer, Nevion.

Earlier this year, Nevion, with its Ventura VS902 media edge adapter, participated alongside other technology suppliers with their respective equipment in a first-ever, live public “interop” demonstration of JPEG 2000 broadcast profile streams over IP.  This successful demonstration and completion of the VSF Technical Recommendations TR-01 for JPEG 2000 over IP were significant contributors to the award.

“A commitment to industry standards is a key part of Nevion’s product strategy as we firmly believe it’s in the interest of our customers,” added Morstøl. “We look forward to continuing our interoperability work and to developing solutions using JPEG 2000.”

The 66thAnnual Technology and Engineering Emmy® Awards will be awarded on January 8, 2015 at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The reception and presentation will take place in The Bellagio Ballroom starting at 6:30 p.m.
