EMERGENCY.LU HONOuRED WITH BETTER SATELLITE WORLD AWARD
SSPI recognises the solution’s added value in emergency situations
LUXEMBOURG, December 7th, 2015 – SES Techcom Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SES S.A. (NYSE Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG), received an award for emergency.lu, which has been recognised at the Better Satellite World Awards, hosted by the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI).
The awards, which took place in London’s renowned Reform Club, celebrate established companies and disruptive innovators who have made the world a more prosperous, healthier, better-educated, more sustainable and an inclusive place. Recipients of the Better Satellite World Awards were evaluated by SSPI in four categories of impact: global or regional impact; distribution of knowledge for the improvement of living standards; governance and commerce; and communication and humanity. The ceremony took place on Friday, December 4th.
emergency.lu, a public-private partnership between the Luxembourg government and three Luxembourg-based companies – SES Techcom Services, HITEC Luxembourg and Luxembourg Air Ambulance, is a global, VSAT-based, multi-layer platform designed to fill the communications gap at the onset of large-scale disasters, providing support to international efforts to cope with devastating events. This year, the solution has been deployed in Nepal and Vanuatu, and earlier in Mali, the Philippines, South Sudan, Venezuela, and Ebola-affected countries in West Africa. The solution provides connectivity and applications for humanitarian interventions via dedicated SES satellite capacity and communication infrastructure.

emergency.lu addresses the challenge of worldwide rapid response capacity and preparedness for humanitarian emergencies by providing a solution to fill the communication gap in the first hours and days after a large-scale disaster.
The multi-layer platform consists of satellite infrastructure and capacity, communication and coordination services, satellite ground terminals for both rapid and long-term deployments, and transportation of equipment to the disaster area within the first 12 to 20 hours – all of which allow it to quickly restore communications and enable efficient rescue efforts.
emergency.lu is a public-private partnership between the Luxembourg government and three Luxembourg-based companies which design and operate and operate the platform – SES Techcom Services, HITEC Luxembourg and Luxembourg Air Ambulance. The solution provides connectivity via dedicated SES satellite capacity and uses its own infrastructure. It is provided as a public good by the Luxembourg government and works in close collaboration with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) as global lead of the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC).
