Qualcomm to enable Deutsche Telekom nuSIM solution on its latest Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem

Integrated SIM technology to enable a new generation of IoT devices

London — October 29, 2019 — Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated has today announced that it will enable Deutsche Telekom’s nuSIM solution on its latest Qualcomm® 9205 LTE modem, which will allow device manufacturers to port nuSIM compliant applications onto devices containing the Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem. nuSIM is a new approach to integrated SIM technology, specifically developed for use in the Internet of Things (IoT) sector where simplicity, cost efficiency and low power consumption are of paramount importance. Since announcing nuSIM at Mobile World Congress 2019, Deutsche Telekom has worked with various industry leaders, including Qualcomm Technologies, on the basis of a shared specification to create an open and fully interoperable ecosystem from concept stage through to implementation.

With this new technology, an optimized SIM function can be integrated straight into the modem chipset, thus removing related logistics, stock keeping and feeding efforts, and adding design advantages due to the saved space on the PCB and in the IoT device. It also includes a dedicated provisioning process, to help protect size-optimized operator profiles (< 500 Bytes) that can be downloaded to the device anywhere in the value chain.

nuSIM, as well as a variety of other security-focused applications, is enabled by the Qualcomm® Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) on the Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem. Qualcomm TEE, based on ARM’s TrustZone, provides an isolated and security-rich environment for processing software operations associated with trusted applications. The Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem is a next-generation global multi-mode single chipset connectivity solution, purpose-built to support reliable and optimized cellular connectivity for IoT applications such as asset trackers, health monitors, security systems, smart city sensors and smart meters, as well as a range of wearable trackers. Key features of the Qualcomm 9205 LTE make it ideal for battery-powered IoT devices that need to operate for multiple years or longer in the field and IoT applications requiring low-power, wide-area connectivity in a small form factor. Therefore, enabling nuSIM is a logical step to further improve the value of the Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem in such contexts.

“The industrial sector is undergoing a digital transformation and we are collaborating with many industrial IoT companies today. We are proud to have been working with Deutsche Telekom and its nuSIM technology from day one of its conception,” said Dino Flore, vice president of technology, Qualcomm Europe, Inc. “It will allow IoT device manufacturers to offer ‘out-of-the-box’ cellular connectivity for the end user. It’s this kind of innovation that will enable the creation of a new generation of IoT devices.”

“Deutsche Telekom is pleased that Qualcomm Technologies will enable nuSIM on their new Qualcomm 9205 LTE modem,” comments Stefan Kaliner, Head of UICC Development at Deutsche Telekom. “nuSIM is an essential innovation for the next generation of IoT devices. A growing community of industry-leading companies is creating an open, viable and fully interoperable ecosystem. It’s really amazing to see this working out.”
