Arthur D. Little partners with European Commission on 5G supply market study

by Anthony Weaver
Arthur D. Little (ADL) today announced that it is preparing a study for the European Commission that supports the development of a diverse and sustainable 5G ecosystem within the EU. As the latest and most powerful generation of mobile network technology, 5G has the potential to transform the way that Europe communicates, does business and consumes entertainment, and also has a key role to play in fostering a green recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. The study, which will run for 11 months, will be conducted by ADL in a consortium with the Austrian Institute of Technology, RAND Europe, Fraunhofer and IMEC.

The study aims to support the European Commission to ensure supplier diversity, healthy competition and maximum interoperability within 5G networks. To this end, the study will provide an in-depth analysis of the market for the provision of 4G and 5G equipment and services in Europe, and assess the potential impact of new 5G deployment and operation models. In addition, the study will identify possible policy measures to address the opportunities and risks of such models.

Dr. Karim Taga, Managing Partner at ADL Austria, comments: “Telecommunication technologies have become central to the ongoing resilience and competitiveness of European economies, and will continue to be of great importance in the future. The results and recommendations from this study will equip the European Commission with the type of knowledge and insight needed to fairly and successfully manage the demands of the 4G and 5G supply market.”

Christoph Uferer, Principal at ADL Austria, adds: “We are very pleased to support the European Commission in the production of this groundbreaking 5G study. Technological and economic developments in recent years have led to a break-up of the traditional telecommunications infrastructure industry, with new and innovative providers entering the market. In order to ensure that the 5G market in Europe is both competitive and well-regulated, a deep understanding of the provider and technology landscape is required.”

The 11 month study will have a strong focus on stakeholder participation, with two workshops and a wide-ranging set of expert interviews already planned. The first workshop is planned for the end of 2020, with initial results expected in early 2021.
