Increased speed and capacity of China Telecom’s network to support national Broadband China initiative and enable more video and other high-bandwidth services for businesses and consumers

Shanghai, September 11, 2012 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is to dramatically increase the capacity and reach of China Telecom’s fiber optic data network, in the process supporting the ‘Broadband China’ program, China’s national initiative to deliver high-speed broadband connections to more than 250 million urban and rural homes by 2015.

Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, the company’s flagship company in China, has been selected as the top provider of converged optical transport network (OTN) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology, winning 70 percent market share in the 10G sector in China Telecom’s most recent central bidding process, its largest such tender to date. Under the agreement Alcatel-Lucent will increase the capacity of China Telecom’s optical transport network, expanding it to reach all of China’s major cities. The expansion program will enable China Telecom to reach more consumers and businesses with its fixed-line broadband access network, and increase the availability of both 3G- and WiFi-based wireless broadband services throughout the country. The expanded network also will give China Telecom the flexibility to address fast-shifting data traffic patterns and customer demand quickly and easily.

Rajeev Singh-Molares, President, Asia Pacific for Alcatel-Lucent said: “Chinese consumers and businesses are demanding increasingly sophisticated services requiring more and more bandwidth. As importantly, China has set aggressive targets to expand broadband availability to underserved segments of the society. Our optical technology will enable China Telecom to address these critical demands cost-effectively today, and lay the groundwork for the future expansion and acceleration of their network to support 100G transport in the future. China Telecom is to carry out large scale deployment of 100G in the coming years, and we feel very confident that Alcatel-Lucent will enhance our partnership with China Telecom by leveraging our advanced solutions and extensive experience.”

Alcatel-Lucent’s Technology Solution provided to China Telecom

Alcatel-Lucent will supply China Telecom with its 100G-ready converged OTN/WDM technology employed in the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and the Photonic Service Engine (PSE) chip.

The 1830 PSS offers exceptional capacity, performance, agility and intelligence for the transport of very large amounts of data over long distances. The platform combines OTN and WDM technology onto a single platform with leading GMPLS (Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching) control plane intelligence, which simplifies operations and lowers costs.

With the 1830 PSS, China Telecom will be able to support a mixture of 10G, 40G and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, which means it can reuse its existing optical infrastructure and then upgrade and expand capacity on the network as needed to meet growing service demand.

The deployed solution is part of Alcatel-Lucent’s Converged Backbone Transformation (CBT) Solution, a key domain of the Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network™ (HLN) architecture, defined to slash transport costs and dramatically reduce operational complexity in core networks.
