Internet routers from Alcatel-Lucent to address demand for movie streaming, video calls and gaming throughout the country

Paris and Tokyo, May 28, 2012 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) announced that it has been selected by NTT DOCOMO, INC. to build NTT DOCOMO’s Internet protocol (IP) network supporting its LTE services with Alcatel-Lucent’s7750 Service Routers which are key elements of its IP routing portfolio.  This will enable NTT DOCOMO to boost the speed and capacity of its IP network dramatically to address exploding demand for mobile broadband services in Japan

IP technology from Alcatel-Lucent will enable NTT DOCOMO to address fast-growing demand for high-speed mobile broadband Internet services such as streamed movies and music, and multi-player video gaming in one of the world’s most advanced markets for mobile communications and consumer technology adoption.

As ownership of smart phones, tablets and other connected devices accelerates, mobile operators such as NTT DOCOMO are seeking ways to feed the increasing appetite for high-bandwidth content and applications while keeping the costs associated with operating these networks as low as possible.

NTT DOCOMO is meeting this need by deploying Alcatel-Lucent’s 7750 Service Routers. Based on its High Leverage NetworkTM (HLN) architecture, Alcatel-Lucent’s IP portfolio is ideally suited to address the demands of NTT DOCOMO’s customers for increasingly sophisticated, high-bandwidth mobile services over the company’s LTE Network.

Alcatel-Lucent’s IP routers features integrated LTE Security Gateway functionality with IPSec (IP security) technology, a key requirement to securely transport LTE data for NTT DOCOMO. These routers can also be expanded easily as customer demand grows. As importantly, they are highly efficient, using less space and power while increasing network performance. This characteristic is especially attractive in the Japanese market, where the power grid is under pressure due to electricity supply constraints and space is always at a premium.

Martin Jordy, President and Managing Director of Alcatel-Lucent Japan, said: “Demand for mobile broadband services in Japan is growing exponentially, posing a serious challenge to operators. Our IP service routing technology provides an unrivaled solution for NTT DOCOMO to expand both capacity and performance of their network while keeping space and power consumption at the lowest level and offering a variety of easy options to upgrade the network as needed to address shifting demand. Alcatel-Lucent is committed to provide sustainable solutions to our customers. This NTT DOCOMO Ran Router project is a perfect example of our strategy. ”

Alcatel-Lucent has joined hands with FUJITSU LIMITED to put together an offer for NTT DOCOMO’s networking needs.  FUJITSU, which has a long-standing relationship with NTT DOCOMO, proposed the 7750 SR as the best platform to address NTT DOCOMO’s requirements. Through the collaboration with FUJITSU, Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its industry-leading IP/MPLS solution and Security Gateway capabilities, based on the company’s 7750 SR.
