Alcatel-Lucent confirms leadership in VDSL2 vectoring with shipments of one million lines
Data confirms significant market demand for vectoring while analyst firm Broadbandtrends puts Alcatel-Lucent “far ahead” of other VDSL2 vectoring vendors
Paris, France, 18 April, 2013 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today confirmed that it has shipped its one millionth VDSL2 vectoring line – the newest DSL technology that enables communications service providers to give their customers super-fast broadband by upgrading their existing copper access infrastructure.
Service providers around the world are under intense pressure from both customers and policy makers to provide high-speed broadband as quickly as possible. While fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) remains the ultimate goal, many service providers have identified the need for additional technology in the near-term to help reach broadband coverage targets.
Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 vectoring technology, launched in late 2011, has made DSL a viable option again. It enables service providers to achieve downstream broadband speeds of 100 megabits-per-second (Mbps) over existing copper connections at up to 400m, meeting or surpassing broadband targets set by national and regional legislators. It also has an equalizing effect, enabling service providers to ensure the same high speeds over lines of varying quality.
Alcatel-Lucent’s one million VDSL2 vectoring lines have been delivered to 11 different service providers, including Belgacom and Telekom Austria. In addition, Alcatel-Lucent has been involved in more than 40 trials, including TDC Denmark, China Telecom, and, with P&T Luxembourg, the world’s first trial combining VDSL2 vectoring with bonding, a technique that doubles the distance over which 100Mbps can be provided.
Confirmation of Alcatel-Lucent’s leading position in VDSL2 vectoring comes from analyst firm Broadbandtrends and its VDSL2 Vectoring Report. To coincide with the publishing of this report Alcatel-Lucent has also released an infographic about VDSL2 vectoring.
For its report, Broadbandtrendsevaluated eight vendors across a number of categories including availability of product, system features, field trials and actual deployment experience. Alcatel-Lucent achieved the overall highest score of all vendors, scoring top marks in all categories but separating itself from the rest of the group in sheer experience with actual deployments.

The Broadbandtrends VDSL2 Vectoring Report also gives the first indication of market potential for vectoring, predicting that all VDLS2 lines shipped from 2014 onwards will be vector-capable, reaching a total installed base of 59 million vectoring lines by 2017. Alcatel-Lucent’s trials have been in all corners of the world, indicating the global interest in VDSL2 vectoring technology.
