Company reports progress on its CR strategy and targets set related to eco-sustainability, its people and digital inclusion, and commits to leading industry in eco-sustainable communications innovations

Paris, June 11, 2012 – Alcatel-Lucent(Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has exceeded or met all targets for its three 2011 Corporate Responsibility priorities – eco-sustainability, its people and digital inclusion, the company reports today in its 2011 Corporate Responsibility report (PDF).

Corporate Responsibility (CR) and sustainability are business imperatives for Alcatel-Lucent, applied and practiced with the same discipline as the company’s core business operations. In 2011, the company published its CR strategy and targets in line with the external linkDow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) as well as the external linkUnited Nations Global Compact and it also adopted the reporting guidelines of the external linkGlobal Reporting Initiative (GRI).

A year later, through its 2011 Corporate Responsibility Report and its Annual Review, it showcases how it has raised the bar in its sustainability reporting as well its key achievements in the areas of eco-sustainability, our people and digital inclusion with a renewed ambition to drive sustainability goals throughout the business.

“In 2011 we announced ambitious goals in the area of Corporate Responsibility and sustainability. We met them and are now building on them,” said Alcatel-Lucent CEO Ben Verwaayen, who also chairs the company’s Corporate Responsibility Council, the highest-level CR governance body within Alcatel-Lucent.

“In 2012, Corporate Responsibility and sustainability will become part of the DNA of our company,” adds Mr Verwaayen. “Our customers need more eco-sustainable technology for their networks and the world needs innovative green solutions. As a global company, we also need to expand the diversity of our leadership and our workforce, in particular moving more women into executive ranks.  And the very nature of our business means we have a responsibility to make communications more accessible, more affordable while being greener to ensure citizens across the world have access to the digital economy. It is not a nice-to-have. It is a must for our business.”

For the first time, the report offers an Augmented Reality experience, enabling access to 25+ videos via certain smart phones and tablets.  A version to make this report more accessible to people with hearing and vision impairments is being prepared according to World Wide Web Consortium and Web Accessibility Initiative standards and will be available on the Alcatel-Lucent web site later in June.  Also for the first time, in 2012, Alcatel-Lucent is providing integrated access to several major reports and general information about Alcatel-Lucent’s strategy, business and financial performance at a new corporate reporting portal at: http://corporatereporting.alcatel-lucent.com/

Key achievements cited in the 2011 Alcatel-Lucent Corporate Responsibility Report

Among Alcatel-Lucent’s achievements cited in the 2011 CR report are:

  • Alcatel-Lucent is on track to meet its goal of increasing the energy efficiency of its key products by at least 25 percent by end 2012 from the base established in 2010.  This includes the company’s award-winning lightRadio™ product line and its other breakthrough product line launched in 2011, the FP 3 400G network processor.
  • Alcatel-Lucent has reduced its carbon footprint by more than 22 percent since 2008, nearly halfway to its ultimate goal of halving its carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2020.  One of the major projects completed last year, was the installation of a six-acre solar array at the headquarters for Bell Labs and the Americas region in Murray Hill, NJ.  More than 115 energy   optimization projects are now underway in 27 of the largest Alcatel-Lucent facilities worldwide.
  • Bell Labs saw a five-fold increase in green university collaborations over 2010 — 11 research projects in progress in 2011 versus two in 2010, way ahead of its goal of tripling such research projects by 2014.  Five additional projects have been proposed for 2012. Today more than 75 Bell Labs scientists are dedicated to green research projects.
  • Alcatel-Lucent tripled the number of employees that completed professional certification, and employees spent a total of 1.3 million hours in training.

The Alcatel-Lucent Foundation launched its Global Signature Program – ConnectEd – providing digital training to more than 5,330 young people within its first year.

For 2012, Alcatel-Lucent will maintain its focus on its three core priorities — environment, our people and digital inclusion — with sharpened focus on being the absolute industry leader in green innovation.  It will take more steps to broaden gender diversity across the company and will continue to extend the benefits of communications technology to communities around the world while being green.  Additional targets have been established to maintain momentum and to achieve its ambition of making corporate responsibility a part of the company’s corporate DNA.

The company has performed an A+ GRI application level check for the GRI, achieved the UN Global Compact Advanced Level and implemented the French Grenelle II requirements a year in advance of their implementation date.  In 2011, Alcatel-Lucent was named sector leader of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 2011 for the Communications Technology Sector, and was placed in the “A” band of the external linkCarbon Disclosure Project Carbon Performance Leadership Index.
