One of the world’s most connected societies to enjoy even higher-quality video, high-speed Internet access and advanced business services with superfast data transport network

Paris, September20, 2012 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and SK Broadband, one of South Korea’s largest broadband service providers, have launched a new 100 gigabit per second (100G)fiber optic network to deliver a wide variety of consumer and business broadband services in the country, one of the world’s most connected societies. SK Broadband has deployed Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G optical coherent technology to address fast-growing subscriber demand for IPTV, high-definition video, high-speed Internet access, Voice over IP, and advanced business services in Seoul and the neighboring GyungGi province.

SK Broadband is looking to Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced optical technology to enable them to manage fast-growing data traffic loads cost-effectively while providing the quality and reliability South Korea’s demanding consumers and business users expect. This advanced fiber optic networking technology will not only address SK Broadband’s technical performance requirements, it also will help the company keep costs in check and reduce power consumption dramatically.

The enhanced network also will give SK Broadband the ability to adapt the network quickly to meet rapidly changing patterns in data traffic and customer demand, and offers the capability to support very high-capacity data transmission capacity up to 8.8 terabits in the future.

Rajeev Singh-Molares, President, Asia Pacific for Alcatel-Lucent said: “SK Broadband is a top player in one of the world’s most competitive markets for communications services, serving a population that has very high expectations in terms of service quality. Our 100G technology, proven in the global market, will dramatically expand the capacity of SK Broadband’s network, helping ensure an excellent quality of experience for their subscribers. As importantly, we are providing SK Broadband with a flexible platform that they can use to expand their capacity to 400G down the road, with only a minimal investment.”

Alcatel-Lucent’s technology solution for SK Broadband

Alcatel-Lucent is supplying SK Broadband with its 100G optical coherent technology employed in the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), developed using the company’s recently introduced Photonic Service Engine (PSE), 400G chip.

The 1830 PSS offers exceptional capacity, performance, agility and intelligence for the transport of very large amounts of data over long distances. With the 1830 PSS, SK Broadband can support a mixture of 10G, 40G and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, making it possible to reuse its existing optical infrastructure and expand capacity as needed to meet growing demand.

The 1830 PSS is a central component of Alcatel-Lucent’s Converged Backbone Transformation (CBT) Solution, a key domain of the Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network™ (HLN) architecture, which is designed to slash transport costs and dramatically reduce operational complexity in core networks.
