Alcatel-Lucent raises the bar in managed services with breakthrough patents that reduce service provider’s costs

Paris, September 27, 2010 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has filed the first two of a series of patent applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) relating to innovations in the delivery of Managed Services.

Over the last 15 years, Bell Labs and Alcatel-Lucent’s Services professionals have worked to blend world class networking and analysis expertise with innovative modeling tools and cost analysis techniques. This has resulted in customer benefits which include lower costs, limited network outages and increased time to market for their end-user applications and services.

“True differentiation in today’s managed services market lies in delivering innovation on multiple levels,” said Yankee Group analyst, Camille Mendler. “Processes and tools are often overlooked, but really make possible profound agility gains. Indeed, this is where service providers should focus their attention when assessing competence in a managed services partner.”

Alcatel-Lucent was able to channel its unique Managed Services experience and expertise into two newly applied for patents – one covering an Operational Competency Center (OCC) methodology for delivering managed network operations services and another describing a powerful new “Bottoms-Up” operations cost estimation methodology.

“It was amazing to see Alcatel-Lucent take an idea which had been floated and experimented within the industry and reach such a high level of maturity with it,” said Andrew Chalmers, TM Forum Director of Training and IT Consultant. “The concept around the creation of the suite of services mirrors the thinking of TM Forum, but Alcatel-Lucent has actually put it into practice ahead of anyone else.”

“The processes we have developed from the pre-contract through the actual services delivery stages show our commitment to excellence and ensure both clear visibility and top quality to our customers” said Andreas Herzog, Head of Alcatel-Lucent Managed Services. “With the help of Bell Labs, our processes are leading edge and protecting our intellectual property is a testament to that.”

As Alcatel-Lucent’s focus on the services business continues to expand and grow, including 15+ years of managed service experience, we will continue to support service provider customers including more innovation and intellectual property around the managed services business. Alcatel-Lucent already maintains a world-wide patent portfolio of more than 27,000 patents addressing a broad spectrum of service and technology innovations.

Alcatel-Lucent currently manages 90+ networks supporting 220 million subscribers. Some of our major customers include E-Plus, Oi (formerly Brasil Telecom), Mobily, Telecom New Zealand, Orange Austria, Orange Switzerland, Reliance, Sunrise Switzerland, Bharti Airtel and Vivacom.
