At a glance:

· In conjunction with the IP&TV World Forum 2012, a panel of senior industry experts has

presented Alcatel-Lucent’s Velocix content delivery network (CDN) solution with the “Best

Network Technology for IPTV” award

· The Alcatel-Lucent Velocix CDN enables pay-TV service providers – both IPTV and cable

operators – to quickly, securely and cost-effectively meet consumers’ demand for a highquality

TV experience that is more interactive, more personal, more social, and available

on any screen

· Alcatel-Lucent is leading the way in this space: it not only architects the networks for

video, but also has the expertise to integrate them into existing infrastructures; reference

customers for the company’s Velocix CDN include TalkTalk (UK), Verizon (US), Orcon (New

Zealand), and some of the largest cable operators in the US

Last month, a panel of senior industry experts – including representatives from cable and telecom

operators, as well as independent professionals – has presented Alcatel-Lucent with the “Best

Network Technology for IPTV” award for the company’s Velocix content delivery network (CDN)

solution. The IP&TV Industry Awards recognize, reward and celebrate innovation, excellence and

achievement in the IPTV industry.

CDN solutions are a central element of the new TV experience consumers are looking for. After

remaining relatively unchanged for several decades, this experience is now becoming more

personalized, interactive and available on new screens. Basically, end users want to consume their

favourite content where they want it, how they want it and when they want it.

Pay-TV service providers are uniquely positioned to truly own subscribers’ new video consumption

patterns: they already have the highest-valued content and the footprint to deliver. By deploying a

CDN in their networks, they can now also cache popular programming content closer to the

consumer – assuring high performance in an economical way.

Alcatel-Lucent is a leading player in this space: it not only architects the networks for video, but

also has the expertise to deploy and integrate them with existing service provider assets. The

success of its Velocix CDN is another example of this: it has been deployed by pay-TV operators

around the world – including TalkTalk (UK), Verizon (US), Orcon (New Zealand), and some of the

largest cable operators in the US. Alcatel-Lucent’s solution has concretely allowed them – for

instance – to make their full linear programming available to their customers on the iPad; with the

highest quality of experience and without jeopardizing the security and anti-piracy demands from

the content owners.

Two defining characteristics of Alcatel-Lucent’s proven Velocix CDN solution are:

· Per-session encryption: a must-have security capability to deliver premium video services to

multiple screens

· A managed service offer: reducing deployment risk, cost and time-to-market

Gavin Whitechurch, Executive Director of the IP&TV World Forum: “The IP&TV Industry Awards are designed to acknowledge and honor the very best of the innovators and forward-thinkers that the global industry has to

offer.”

Paul Larbey, Vice President and General Manager of Alcatel-Lucent’s Velocix activities: “We are very proud to accept this award and recognition for our Velocix CDN solution. By deploying a CDN, service providers can securely deliver all programming to authorized consumers on their connected device of choice. At the same time, they have the ability to provide the content delivery control

and quality assurance that content owners see as essential to the successful distribution of their content. With Alcatel-Lucent’s Velocix CDN, pay-TV operators can delight consumers as well as content rights holders, and secure their role as the preferred distributor of premium video entertainment services.”
