Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs launches a project in Mexico to research cloud technologies

Dr. Óscar Javier González, Bell Labs lead researcher for the project is working with students of the Tecnológico de Monterrey’s Computer Technology school

México City, January 14, 2014 – Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), has started a collaborative project with the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Cuernavaca, to research cloud computing technologies.

As part of this project students from Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Cuernavaca will apply their knowledge and expertise to research network designs for cloud computing, which is used by companies and governments to link to thousands of processors connected to a fast communications network, where they share resources and store information for millions of users. The project reflects a growing focus on the part of Bell Labs on research into cloud networking technologies.

Dr. Oscar Javier González, Alcatel-Lucent’s researcher, explained: “Bell Labs is one of the greatest sources of innovation in the telecommunications industry worldwide. It currently has more than 33,000 active patents, and 12 Bell Labs researchers have shared in 7 Nobel prizes. Support for research is in our DNA, hence the importance of fostering academic projects like the one in which we are currently engaged”.

Through this Project, students of the school of Engineering from the Tec de Monterrey, Campus Cuernavaca, will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge on a real-world project with the combined supervision of Bell Labs researchers and by M.S. Dalila Jiménez Hernández, professor at the Engineering and Architecture Department of the Academic Division of the University.

The students will work on the “Graphic Display in Cloud Computing Topology”, where tools will be developed to help visualize, monitor and debug applications running in a large-scale, distributed computing environment.

“In Mexico there is a lot of talent focused on research into information and telecommunications technologies, and that is why it is important to motivate students in related fields to learn more, be creative and develop their skills and knowledge through projects that have real, practical implications in the emerging field of cloud technologies,” added Dr. González.

Dr. Oscar Javier González is a Bell Labs Fellow and during the last few years he has made significant technical contributions to the development of platforms and software tools to facilitate the fast development of distributed systems with high availability using a model to describe the system. Two Alcatel-Lucent products using the tools developed by Dr. González have been awarded the Bell Labs President Gold Award. This prize acknowledges “Excellence and technical innovation with impact on business” of the company. The contributions by Dr. González in his area of expertise have led to the award of 9 patents in the USA and more than 20 publications.
