Ambulance Service uses life saving communications service from InTechnology

Instant Communications service helps Heathrow Air Ambulance
crews reach patients more quickly

6th April 2011 – Managed IT services provider, InTechnology is helping Heathrow Air Ambulance Service (HAAS) respond to medical emergencies more quickly and effectively with its Instant Communications service.

HAAS needed to replace its ageing two-way UHF service as it provided limited coverage making it difficult for the control centre to locate its crew members. InTechnology’s Instant Communications service allows HAAS’ control room-based staff to instantly locate and communicate with crew members and allocate the appropriate medics to an incident through its PC-based control interface, the Instant Communications Manager Client. This saves valuable time in emergency situations which greatly improves patient treatment and outcomes during the all important ‘golden hour’ after an incident.

HAAS operates a 24-hour service from its control centre at Heathrow Airport and its service offering includes the provision of medical escorts on scheduled flights and escorting critically ill patients to hospital. InTechnology’s Instant Communications service allows HAAS to take advantage of Push to Talk (PTT) technology on a GSM mobile phone and uses 2G over a number of networks to ensure reliable connectivity and a wide field of coverage.

Colin Walker-White, operations manager, HAAS Control Centre said: “The speed at which I can now locate and talk to my crews can make the difference between life and death to the people we’re helping.

“Using one device, a ‘ruggedised’ BB3G handset to access the Instant Communications service instead of having to carry around a walkie-talkie and mobile phone allows our crews to contact hospitals and any other services they need as soon as they reach a patient at the push of a button.

“This means that they can inform the medical team at the hospital about the nature of the patient’s condition and ensure the right team is on hand as soon as they arrive; or if that hospital is unable to take the patient, an alternative can be found without delay.”

Maria Pouney, general manager for Instant Communications, InTechnology said: “Our Instant Communications service is ideal in emergency situations where a rapid response is vital.

“The range of features our Instant Communications service offers means that anyone managing an emergency crew can locate and speak to them instantly, either on a one-to-one basis, one-to-many or as a broadcast communication to a group. The crew members themselves also have an added layer of security as they can contact the control centre for help instantly.”

HAAS benefits from the full suite of InTechnology’s Instant Communication services:

Instant Locate: This feature allows the control centre to locate and deploy the nearest crew.

Instant Talk: Allows for instant communication either on a one-to-one, one-to-many or as a broadcast communication to a group.

Instant Alert: An added layer of security for vulnerable lone workers. An alert button on the handset silently communicates with the control centres if help is needed
