Antel Deploys Cisco ASR 9000 for Next Generation High Speed Internet Services in Uruguay

Advanced IPv6 Enabled Network Optimized for Faster Broadband and New Services

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 18, 2014 – Cisco announced today that Antel, the leading provider of communication services for consumers and businesses in Uruguay, has chosen the Cisco® Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series (ASR 9000) as part of its next-generation network delivering enhanced broadband services.

The Cisco ASR 9000 Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) implementation is based on the Cisco IOS XR operating system and a hardware architecture that enables the fastest, most dense and most resilient BNG solution in the industry. With the implementation of BNG in Antel’s network, the company has consolidated and simplified its network architecture by aggregating the business and residential customers to a single, dual-stack capable (IPv4/IPv6), Ethernet based Service Node.

Exhaustive tests conducted with the ASR 9000 by Antel and Cisco have determined that the deployment of several BNG clusters, configured with 10 and 100GE ports, adequately addresses the growing demand for broadband services across most of the Uruguay population, estimated to reach soon 2 million broadband subscribers.

Highlights/Key Facts

  • The Cisco ASR 9000 Series is specifically designed to give network operators flexibility to offer new services by providing a strong foundation for residential video and broadband services and applications, along with business-class Ethernet.
  • As one of the highest interface density Ethernet platforms in the industry, the Cisco ASR 9000 series meets Antel’s need for very large numbers of 10GE and 100GE ports.
  • The Cisco ASR 9000 series with complete IPv4/IPv6 Dual-Stack features ensures that Antel can launch emerging business services that require the IPv6 protocol.

Quote from Antel

“Antel selected Cisco’s ASR 9000 after evaluation of the platform’s capabilities.  We needed a system that could support a combination of increased access speeds for our broadband customers, as well as deliver a set of value-added services such as IPV6.  We are confident the ASR 9000 represents that solution for Antel, and are pleased to be expanding our relationship with Cisco.”

Bill Gartner, vice president and general manager of Cisco’s High End Routing and Optical Business Unit

“We are very pleased that Antel selected the ASR 9000 to serve as the foundation for its next-generation network.  The platform is capable of ushering in an entirely new wave of exciting services and applications. As a result of the ASR 9000 deployment, Antel’s enhanced Carrier Ethernet network will be positioned to support faster broadband speeds as well as support IPv6 services.”

Lucas Olocco, director Service Provider segment, Cisco Latin America

“The decision by Antel to expand its next generation broadband services with the ASR 9000 is a testament to our shared vision of how networks will be built in the future.  With the ability to be the central aggregation device for subscriber management, the ASR 9000 helps Antel build upon its broadband success through improved 10 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet densities, expanded service capabilities and a commitment to a carrier class architecture.”
