The 47th ABU General Assembly in Tokyo, Japan
TOKYO: 20 October 2010 – The ABU’s General Assembly and associated meetings ended in Tokyo today after a week of discussions that brought together over 400 people.
It ended with the election of two new Vice-Presidents.
The President of KBS-Korea, Kim In-Kyu, and the Director General of PBC-Pakistan, Murtaza Solangi, were elected unopposed to the ABU posts.
They replace Manuel Goncalves of TDM-Macau and Hassan Khojasteh of IRIB-Iran.
The new Vice-Presidents join the President, Yoshinori Imai, and Vice-President Ibrahim Yahaya in the ABU leadership group.
RTB-Brunei was elected to the ABU Administrative Council and BBS-Bhutan and KBS-Korea were re-elected.
The final day of the General Assembly saw a professional discussion on the convergence between broadcasting and the Internet, with speakers from ABC-USA, Reuters, ZDF-Germany, KBS-Korea and the Thailand Development Research Institute.
The General Assembly concluded with a reception hosted by NHK-Japan, which hosted the annual meetings. The General Assembly on 19-20 October was preceded by five days of meetings of the ABU Programme Committee, Technical Committee and Sports Group, among others.
India’s national television broadcaster, Doordarshan, will host the 48th ABU General Assembly in New Delhi in 2011.
ABU Prizes 2010
Japanese state broadcaster Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK) was the big winner of the ABU Prizes 2010, which was held on the first day of the 47th ABU General Assembly in Tokyo on 19 October.
NHK walked away with four TELEVISION awards: the Children category for ‘The Three Musketeers: Episode 20: The Chaotic Ball’, Sports category for ‘Miracle Body: Downhill Skiing – Race Against Fear’. It also received special commendations for its Sports, ‘Rivals for Gold’, and Youth for ‘Discover Science: Let’s See the Speed of Sound’. It also bagged one RADIO award in Drama for ‘Revival’.
The Chinese state broadcaster RTPRC garnered two of the seven RADIO awards: the Radio News award for ‘Trace the Reason of Cyberspace Addiction’, and the External Broadcast award for ‘In the Days of Drought, What Can We Do?’. It also received the TV News category prize for ‘Series Reports on Wangjialing Mine Tragedy in Shanxi Province, China.
A total of 172 submissions that met entry requirements were received this year. Out of this number, 112 were for the TV categories and the remaining 60 were for the radio categories.
Three winners received the Asiavision Annual Awards. CCTV-China was honoured the winner for the most news flashes and NHK and Thai broadcaster MCOT were awarded for the overall quality of contributions.
Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) won the Dennis Anthony Memorial Award. The award is presented forthe best news coverage of the year by a member of Asiavision, the ABU’s daily news exchange. It is named after a former ABU Senior Officer of News, who died in 1996.
Two broadcast excellence awards were also presented on the same night. The ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award was presented to Abdolali Aliaskary of IRIB-Iran, and the ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award was presented to Zhang Jianping, Vice President of Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation, RTPRC-China.
