What: ATIS will present a webinar titled Consolidation & Convergence: Transition of Telecommunications Network Facilities and Technology Platforms in a Multi-Carrier Environment to address the benefits and challenges of consolidation and convergence as communications service providers migrate from legacy systems to IP-based networks. Specifically, the webinar will focus on the technologies, processes, and policies identified as most significant in this migration: fiber replacing copper; reduction in the number of network centers; and changes in legacy geographic- and service-based policies.

Webinar Content: As communications service providers migrate from legacy systems to IP-based networks, Central Office (CO) consolidation and the associated reduction or elimination of copper will have far-reaching business, cost-savings, technology, regulatory, and environmental impacts. The new, next generation facilities will provide converged services to larger populations of customers across wider geographic areas than possible before. Circuit switches and their associated line-side equipment will be superseded by IP-based technology that will support voice, data, and video in a unified architecture. This will enable service providers to more efficiently offer customers the enhanced and integrated services that they demand. The new COs may also require less space, power, and environmental support than most of the traditional individual facilities they replace. And they will contribute to improvements in vital operations such as network management and the access to emergency services. In addition to learning about the changes consolidation and convergence are driving the marketplace the webinar audience will also have an opportunity to ask questions of the presenters.

About the Speakers
Robin Meier, Senior Technical Support Analysis Network, AT&T, works for AT&T as the representative for ATIS’ Next Generation Interconnection Interoperability Forum (NGIIF). In 2010 she won the ATIS award for Outstanding Contributions to an ATIS Forum or Committee. In conjunction with the NGIIF she was a Co-Convener of the TOPS Council – Consolidation and Convergence Task Force (CC-TF) along with Verizon. Prior to the CC-TF she participated in the ATIS TOPS Council – Facilities Consolidation Task Force and represented ATIS on the FCC Communications Security, Reliability and Interoperability Council’s Working Group 4B, Transition to NG 9-1-1. Additionally, Robin has held leadership positions as Moderator, Assistant Moderator, and Co-Chair, in the ATIS Network Interconnection Interoperability Forum for 12 years while she represented AT&T.
Edwin Verplanke, Platform Solution Architect, Intel is a systems architect and is part of Intel’s Embedded and Communications Group. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, respectively. For the past 15 years Edwin has focused on communications board design, participated in various standards development activities covering high-speed interconnects, and more recently, researching multi-core architectures and new technologies such as virtualization for the embedded and communications market.
James Baskin, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Verizon, began his career as a Marketing Representative for IBM in New York City and then spent 10 years as an officer of American Express Bank and Swiss Bank Corporation leading systems development efforts and managing data and voice communications in both companies. During the past 22 years he has been a Director and senior technologist at Verizon and its predecessor companies. He has been active in industry standards since 1990 and has held leadership positions in a number of standards development organizations. He is currently responsible for Verizon’s standards efforts in international numbering, naming, and addressing. Jim is the Chairman of the Country Code 1 ENUM LLC and Co-Convener of the Consolidation and Convergence Task Force of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS). He also participates in the Commercial Stakeholders Group of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and is a private sector advisor on the U.S. government delegation to ITU-T Study Group 2.
