ATIS’ Big Data Analytics Initiative
Develops Framework to Simplify Data Exchange among Providers

WASHINGTON — ATIS today announced the launch of its Big Data Analytics Focus Group, an initiative of its Technology and Operations (TOPS) Council, to address big data analytics in the ICT industry from a cross-operator perspective. Network operators possess rich, detailed data about subscribers and their activities, and this data is of value not only to operators, but also to brands, retailers and marketers tailoring offers to receptive consumers. ATIS is examining how to leverage the industry’s large data streams to benefit customers and telecommunications carriers.

“Mobile advertising more than doubled in 2012 to over $3 billion in the U.S. alone, and similar growth is projected over the next few years. Creating the supporting network infrastructure has required massive investments from operators, yet such revenues are dominated by over-the-top providers in the search, social and app space,” said Jonjie Sena, Co-Chair of the Big Data Analytics Focus Group and Vice President of Marketing at TEOCO. “This new ATIS initiative will help operators capture an equitable share in this dynamic and expanding market.”

The Focus Group is developing an Analytics Metadata Framework to simplify exchange of data among providers and help third parties better understand, use and extend the “analytics insight” inherent in operators’ data streams. Its efforts will incorporate the contributions of groups addressing consumer privacy concerns. The initiative also will investigate specific technologies used in big data analytics to understand the value of various solutions and best practices for ease of data integration.

“Operators already are deploying big data analytics solutions geared toward monetization, and increasing cooperation will magnify the value of these efforts. Standardization is key.” said ATIS President and CEO Susan M. Miller. “The new Focus Group is making it possible to integrate data between operators as well as across different lines of business such as wireless, landline and broadband to provide the “big picture” view third-party marketing teams seek. ATIS’ strengths in developing technical solutions and building solid industry consensus position it well to lead development of a common industry-wide approach to big data analytics.”
