ATIS Launches Focus Group to Address Opportunities for ICT in the Emerging M2M Economy

WASHINGTON – ATIS today announced the launch of the Machine-to-Machine Focus Group (M2M-FG), an initiative of the ATIS Technology and Operations (TOPS) Council. The Focus Group will address how to seize core opportunities through standards work for ICT solutions as they pertain to M2M as well as Smart Grid and the connected vehicle.

“M2M is creating an entire ecosystem and economy with significant revenue creation opportunities,” said ATIS President and CEO, Susan Miller. “Value added services associated with M2M remain a relatively untapped market for ICT. The Focus Group’s work gives ATIS member companies the opportunity to shape and define ICT’s contribution to this burgeoning space.”

Earlier this year, the ATIS TOPS Council formed a Landscape Team to examine the relationships among M2M, Smart Grid, and the connected vehicle, and identify areas that require further standards assessment and development. This effort focused on assessing the need to develop a common M2M service platform that can be utilized by both the Smart Grid and connected vehicle.

The initial work of the M2M-FG will assess standards issues in the areas of: carrier portability for devices without need to swap out SIMs and for embedded SIM devices; inter-service platform communication if needed; provisioning, activation, and billing; the abstraction layer and the service delivery platform. The Group’s work also will include the development of partner/relationship maps with other non-ATIS vendors and standards development organizations.

The ATIS M2M-FG is co-chaired by Jeff Edlund, CTO, Communications & Media Solutions, HP; and Gale Lightfoot, Senior Staff Program Manager, Office of the CTO, Service Provider Business Unit, Cisco. Twenty companies are participating in the group: ADTRAN, Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T, CenturyLink, Cisco, Ericsson, Hitachi, Hewlett-Packard, Huawei, Intel, Juniper, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks, Qualcomm, Sprint, SureWest, Syniverse, Telephone & Data Systems, Telcordia and Verizon.
