ATIS Makes Recommendations to the FCC to Help Prevent Misuse of Caller ID Services
April 19, 2011 — Washington, DC — ATIS has submitted comments in response to the Federal Communications Commission’s (Commission’s) Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to implement the Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009 (TICI). ATIS’ comments support the Commission’s efforts to address the problem of the transmission of misleading or inaccurate caller ID information by bad actors and provide technical input on specific Commission proposals.
In its comments, ATIS provides information regarding technical limitations pertaining to the verification of Calling Party Numbers and supports the Department of Justice’s recommendation regarding the definition “IP-enabled voice service” for the purpose of the TICI. ATIS also urges the Commission not to explicitly reference the Jurisdiction Information Parameter in its definitions of “Caller Identification Information” or “Caller Identification Service,” and supports the proposed exemption for carriers that transmit Caller ID information that they receive from another.
“ATIS strongly supports the goals of the TICI and the FCC’s efforts to implement this important legislation. Therefore, we are pleased to offer guidance regarding effective enforcement of the rules to prevent misuse of caller ID services,” said Susan Miller, ATIS’ President and CEO. “Our comments on this topic directly reflect ATIS’ mission of ensuring the availability of reliable and accurate communications services for all consumers.”
