BigBand’s SDV Reaches More than 39 Million Households

Company expands industry leading Switched Digital Video solution for bandwidth savings to support additional multiscreen services

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., May 18, 2011 – BigBand Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: BBND), today announced that the Company’s Switched Digital Video (SDV) solution continues to lead the industry with more than 39 million households passed. North American providers such as Bright House Networks, Charter Communications, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, as well as key International providers including Jiangsu Cable in China and LG U+ in Korea, have deployed BigBand’s SDV solution. By increasing the bandwidth efficiency of their networks, operators are able to deliver more HDTV programming and on-demand content to more screens.

BigBand has also recently introduced new releases of its Converged Video Exchange (CVEx™) video control plane and Switched Video Analysis (SVA) software solutions. CVEx 2.5 is the latest scalable, cost-effective video delivery control plane solution. It is designed to allow operators to make full use of today’s network infrastructure and also provide a graceful migration path forward to tomorrow’s converged network. CVEx is a highly efficient way to ramp up new services such as additional channels, more non-linear service offerings, and multiscreen video solutions. SVA 5.0 is the most recent release offering powerful new capabilities for monitoring the utilization and performance of BigBand’s SDV systems in near real time along with predictive tools for optimization and planning, automatic and scheduled report generation, additional detailed metrics, automatic highlighting of network trouble spots, and deeper integration with CVEx to automatically detect topology and other configuration changes.

“As service providers continue to expand services, CVEx remains an efficient way to rapidly expand network capacity in addition to enabling the critical insight into the health of the network,” said Ludovic Milin, Director of Product Line Management at BigBand Networks. “Downtime and denial of service are not an option. This is why we’ve packed our SDV solution with so many ways to monitor and optimize network operations. Operators can more effectively plan their resources, delivering content wherever and whenever it’s requested.”

CVEx 2.5 Control Plane Improves Spectrum Utilization

CVEx is an intelligent control plane that manages video services across the network edge to both traditional RF set-top boxes as well as next-generation IP devices. CVEx brings together RF and IP video into a single resource pool. It dynamically controls the allocation of all video services within a single bandwidth/spectrum pool and provides a holistic view into usage and resource utilization. This approach eliminates today’s dedicated bandwidth silos for individual services such as Video on Demand (VOD), SDV and Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) to dramatically improve overall spectrum utilization to enable services growth. CVEx supports industry standard protocols and interfaces for third-party applications. Operators will further benefit from reduced operational costs and the ability to leverage their existing infrastructure while migrating to next-generation IP video as the market and their subscribers demand.

SVA 5.0 Answers Operators’ Needs for Real-time Insight, Report Automation and What-if Scenarios for Predictive Analytics

Providing operators with better predictive analytics is a key function of SVA. The industry’s most advanced tool for SDV and broadcast video applications introduces innovative and useful functions for monitoring, capacity planning and system optimization, helping operators improve their networks’ operations, visibility, performance and capital efficiency.

BigBand’s SVA enables operators to quickly add new services while maintaining the highest service quality. The combination of CVEx and SVA offers operators’ fast and economical bandwidth expansion to support new revenue-generating services with greater visibility into the performance and utilization of their networks.

Innovative SDV Solution Drives Delivery of Personalized, High-Margin Services

BigBand’s Emmy-award winning SDV solution enables dramatic savings in bandwidth consumption, allowing operators to increase revenues via expanded program offerings and the delivery of personalized, high-margin services. Unlike legacy environments, network capacity in a BigBand SDV environment seamlessly scales with the number of active viewers and number of services offered. This means that with the proper system sizing and configuration, there is virtually no limit to the programming and personalization that can be made available to subscribers.
