CABLE & WIRELESS PANAMA TO INTRODUCE 4G
Cable & Wireless Panama (CWP), the Panama business of Cable & Wireless Communications, is upgrading its mobile network to fourth generation technology (4G) to capture the country’s growing demand for mobile data.
CWP operates using the market-leading +Movil brand.
It will begin the nationwide introduction of
High Speed Packet Access plus (HSPA+) technology from September.
4G is being introduced as part of a major network upgrade programme which will also deliver faster internet browsing for all mobile customers, better network coverage and additional capacity to support increasing demand for mobile data.
4G mobile services will deliver much faster mobile data download speeds for Panamanians enabling them to enjoy higher bandwidth services like video and mobile gaming. They will also facilitate the growth of mobile broadband in the country, enabling Panamanians to access the internet through laptops and tablets in far more locations.

Mobile phones have been through several generations of development.
The introduction of basic data services (predominantly text messaging) was called second generation (2G). EDGE networks provide faster connectivity to enable easier usage of mobile internet. EDGE networks are often marketed as 2.5G.
The 3/3.5G standard was given to networks utilising High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) technology, which enabled even faster download speeds and the use of multimedia services such as video calling and streamed video clips. 3.5G networks also enable operators to launch mobile broadband services.
The International Telecoms Union has now designated that a further generational leap has taken place in mobile technology. The 4G standard is awarded to a range of network technologies including HSPA+, WiMax and Long Term Evolution (LTE).
