Hubert (Bert) Whyte is the President and Chief Executive Officer of net.com. Previously, Mr. Whyte served as President and CEO of Advanced Computer Communications (ACC). At ACC, he restructured the organization and doubled annual revenues before its acquisition by Ericsson. Prior to ACC, Mr. Whyte served as Vice President and General Manager of the Access Products unit of Newbridge Networks Corporation. Earlier in his career, he gained experience with British Telecom, Ericsson, Shell Oil, Business Intelligence Services, Mitel and Siemens.

The customary products of mobile phone operators, carriers, and broadband access providers are rapidly becoming commodities. Their services, and their competitors’, are much alike, prices are low, margins are low, and they cannot sell advanced, higher priced, services. Broadband providers need a new business model to substitute the current flat rate. A recent survey found that users were often dissatisfied with “best effort” service and that many would pay more for quality of service guarantees for their Internet connectivity.

The retail market in the UK and in much of the rest of Europe suffered badly last year and only the mighty, frantic, and wholly unavoidable January sales put a smile back on the face of many a high street shop manager. Why was every mobile phone outlet filled to the rafters before and after Christmas with pubescent teenagers checking out the latest, smallest, offering from our Nordic cousins? Why were they filled with confused parents who wondered, should they buy the red one or the black one for their pride and joy? Do we just love buying new phones: are we a 2.1 mobile phone nuclear family? Do we like trading in the old one for a better model like some postmodern second hand car dealer? Well, probably yes, as the profits of retailers will tell you.
