Cannon Technologies Triumphs at the 2013 Green IT Awards

Cannon Technologies is celebrating after winning the prestigious Team of the Year Award at the Green IT Awards 2013, which recently took place at London’s famous Grand Connaught Rooms. The accolade recognises the company’s ground-breaking work on the specification and installation of the T4 Modular Data Centre at the headquarters of Datacentrix in Johannesburg, South Africa – a location that is exposed to severe weather conditions and seismic activity.

Now in their fourth year, the Green IT Awards showcase and reward the technology, tools and organisations that make a significant contribution to improving the IT industry’s environmental performance. Many of the Awards are decided by public vote, with others considered by a panel of experts, and elements scrutinised include the originality of the submission, plus evidence of sustainable, social and economic benefits. This year saw over 140 industry figures gather to see the outcome of these hotly contested honours and enjoy an opportunity to network and share ideas.

‘I’m delighted that our fantastic T4 Modular Data Centre team has been recognised at the Green IT Awards,’ commented Mark Awdas, engineering manager at Cannon Technologies. ‘The Datacentrix project offered us a number of unique challenges in relation to providing a reliable and resilient solution that could deal with extreme conditions in the most energy efficient ways possible.’

The T4 Modular Data Centre was transported in 56 crates from Cannon Technologies’ head office in New Milton, Hampshire, to the car park at Datacentrix’s headquarters. Once delivered, it was assembled in just two weeks and the finished data centre comprises 36 cabinets, two 200kVA UPS, two integrated PDU distribution panels, battery racks, lighting, fire suppression and cold aisle cocooning. Tier III resilient and upgradable to Tier IV, its impressive power usage effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.3 and scalable design were praised by the judging panel.

During construction process the ambient temperature was around 50°C in the morning, but due to the insulation that Cannon Technologies incorporated into the data centre that figure dropped by 30°C inside the building. This meant that although cold aisle cocooning was used in the centre section, there was no excessive heat build-up elsewhere, which meant that any power needed to control the climate was used as efficiently as possible.

Things got even better on the night for Cannon Technologies when it was also announced as the runner-up in the One to Watch – Company category. This is testament to the company’s growing status as a designer and supplier of innovative energy efficient data centre technologies.

Matt Goulding, managing director of Cannon Technologies, concluded, ‘The Green IT Awards was a thoroughly enjoyable and successful occasion for us, and it was particularly rewarding to have our organisational prowess and the overall quality of the T4 Modular Data Centre acknowledged. Our ability to continually push the boundaries of data centre containment technology means that we are gaining new customers all over the world and going from strength to strength.’
