Certero warns software mega trends increase licence management challenges
Leading Software Asset Management specialist Certero is warning organisations of the pitfalls in adopting the latest technology trends such as Virtualisation, Cloud, BYOD when trying to manage software licenses.
Where once software applications were purchased and installed on a single device, now they can be run in virtual environments or accessed on a pay-as-you-go basis.
The new models for delivery such as Virtualisation, Cloud and SaaS are increasing the complexity of the vendor licensing rules and many organisations are finding them exposed to a web of financial pitfalls and liabilities.
Certero Managing Director John Lunt said there has been a huge focus on server virtualisation in recent years, with businesses consolidating their servers to reduce the hardware necessary to run the software the business needs. With such an uptake in server virtualisation and now desktop virtualisation, the size and commercial risk created by breaching license terms and conditions, are set to rise.
“Undoubtedly, the virtualisation model presents a credible solution to many of the IT cost reduction challenges, but many organisations overlook the licensing implications that are not found in a traditional PC and server environment.” Said Lunt.
Software licensing can be a complex area due to the fact that software is licensed and not owned, and it is a complexity that is compounded in a virtualised environment, where there is an increased probability that organisations will violate their existing licence agreements. Such violations are not taken lightly by software publishers, and could prove very costly.
Commenting ahead of their Platinum Sponsorship of the Gartner IT Asset Management Summit in London on the 9th & 10th September 2013, Certero’s John Lunt said: “The primary question organisations must address is if their existing IT Asset Management/Software Asset Management (SAM) solution is able to manage software applications – be it Microsoft, Oracle, Adobe, IBM and so on. If this is not the case then a large black shadow is cast over licence compliance.”
