Cicero Announces Mobile VoIP for Android

by david.nunes

Cicero Networks www.ciceronetworks.com, the leading provider of converged IP voice and multimedia software, today announced the release of CiceroPhone for the Android platform. CiceroPhone has been the preferred dual-mode mobile VoIP & VCC client of service providers since its release in 2004, enabling converged services on the world’s leading smartphone platforms.

CiceroPhone for Android supports mobile VoIP, advanced multi-mode features such as automatic network selection (2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, WiMAX and LTE) and seamless in-call transfer as users roam between IP & Cellular networks. It is designed to run on any handset running Android 2.1 and higher.

The Cicero convergence engine allows voice calls to be routed across IP (Wi-Fi) and cellular networks on behalf of any application on the device. While the focus has traditionally been on supporting the native voice applications, the Cicero engine can also be used to add multi-mode voice to social networking and enterprise unified communication applications on Android handsets.

“The rapid adoption of Android creates opportunities for service providers of all shapes and sizes. For the first time ever, Cicero software can be deployed on a range of devices that cover all cellular environments, including GSM, CDMA and WiMAX” said Elaine Treacy, VP Marketing & Strategic Alliances at Cicero Networks. “Furthermore, Android’s open source model allows us to deploy the software as an application in the field or to work with device manufacturers to offer a fully integrated and seamless user experience.”

CiceroPhone has been designed specifically to benefit from the latest Android developments. While initially targeting the mobile phone environment, the software has been implemented such that it could be deployed on devices with different form factors and capabilities, such as the tablet or set-top-box. At its core, CiceroPhone on Android uses the same market-leading convergence engine which has been type-approved by the leading SIP and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) platform vendors.

The initial release of CiceroPhone on Android targets voice as the core application for convergence. It will be available in October 2010. Other features of the Cicero convergence engine, including multi-mode messaging and IP video calling, will be incorporated in future releases.
