Clarion selects VNC® Mobile Solution for Automotive to underpin integration of mobile device applications with in-vehicle infotainment systems
1st November 2010: RealVNC, the original developer and leading provider of VNC®, today announces that Clarion Co., the global Tier-1 automotive equipment supplier, has licensed its VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive. Terminal Mode is the recently announced CE4A (the German Automotive industry working group comprising Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Volkswagen) and Nokia open standard, based on VNC.
The VNC technology enables a totally new generation of in-car infotainment systems that integrate seamlessly with mobile devices and enable consumers to easily and safely access their smartphone content and applications. The VNC solution permits mobile devices to be automatically detected, accessed and controlled through the head unit touch-screen, bezel keys or steering wheel controls as they enter the vehicle. RealVNC provides a single, common device-independent communications protocol along with the VNC Server software running on any existing or new mobile device, for all operating systems. This provides car manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers with the major advantage of not having to continuously upgrade in-vehicle system software to keep pace within the fast moving mobile market.
Renowned for its pursuit of the ultimate human-machine interface, Clarion has used its wealth of experience in automotive infotainment systems to integrate the VNC Viewer into its next-generation HMI design, embedded within the vehicle head unit. With advanced connectivity to mobile devices, the solution also provides mechanisms for policing application access to minimize driver distraction and ensure safe operation is always maintained, whilst offering the driver the highest quality experience.
“After evaluating several options and development paths, we selected VNC as it provided the most comprehensive and mature solution, with the widest range of cross-platform device support and features. The performance is excellent and puts little load constraints on the limited head unit resources,” said Hideyuki Tamura, General Manager, Software Development Division, Clarion. “It is allowing us to accelerate the development and quickly deliver solutions to our Automotive OEMs. We have found working in close collaboration with the RealVNC team to be a very positive experience as their flexibility and responsiveness has been instrumental in the timely delivery of our project.”
Tom Blackie, Vice President Mobile of RealVNC added, “As a world leader in vehicle infotainment systems, Clarion’s decision to select our mobile solution further reinforces VNC’s growing role in the development of a new generation of vehicle infotainment systems. We have worked closely with Clarion designers for a considerable time and their depth of experience and industry knowledge has enabled us to gain a detailed insight into the demanding requirements of the automotive industry.”
