CONFERENCE REPORT

Be Part of the Cloud-Enabled Infrastructure Evolution or Lose Your Competitive Edge, Telstra Global Tells Enterprises

26 February 2014, LONDON: Speaking at Cloud Expo Europe in London, Nathan Bell, Director of Marketing, Products and Pricing at Telstra Global, told the packed conference that having cloud-enabled managed hosting will eliminate many of the overheads associated with traditional ICT, making it a crucial investment for any enterprise which hopes to succeed in the near future.

According to Bell, an evolved cloud platform model is the answer for ensuring sustainable growth and providing enterprises with a competitive edge.

“Traditionally many enterprises have used in-house infrastructure or collocated with an external data centre provider, yet an evolution is on the horizon with providers now developing and offering cloud-enabled managed hosting,” explained Bell. “If companies do not embrace this new development, they are in jeopardy of falling behind their competitors.”

Throughout the presentation Bell addressed the importance of emerging markets for enterprises in creating potential business opportunities, commenting that “70 per cent of world growth over the next few years will come from emerging markets, with China and India accounting for 40 per cent of that growth.”

Bell added that in order to access the emerging markets in these regions, having a cloud provider is the only solution. He said cloud computing has the ability to save costs, increase business agility and deliver IT in an on-demand manner. It can also overcome the barrier of needing a secure network in regions with expensive terrestrial infrastructure.

“To be able to get a strong and secure network in regions such as Asia Pacific is often tricky and costly for companies based abroad,” Bell explained. “Many Asian networks are constructed via submarine cables under the sea, which differs from Europe and much of the US which instead uses terrestrial cables for connectivity.”

With the greater distances involved, Bell told his audience that using a service provider with a global cloud infrastructure prevents critical applications from failing due to latency issues, giving a better and more efficient customer experience, as well as reduced CAPEX and OPEX.

“Your cloud is only as strong as your network,” concluded Bell. “The continent of Asia spans across an extremely vast distance. For example the distance from London to LA is 8,778km, which is dwarfed compared to the 12,482km distance between Auckland and Delhi.”

Telstra Global’s connected cloud hosting solutions enable global businesses to consistently deploy applications across multiple locations to support transformation, productivity and growth. Recently, the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud-Enabled Managed Hosting, Asia/Pacific1 (published in December 2013), recognised Telstra as a Challenger for cloud-enabled managed hosting in the Asia-Pacific region.
