Comment from Gaby Junowicz, VP of Marketing and Business Development, Siklu Wireless Communications (www.siklu.com), in relation to the news that the European Commissioner has imposed new tariffs on roaming charges.
“The new tariffs on roaming charges, which have been imposed by the European Commissioner, will come as welcome news to anyone planning to use their phone in Europe this summer. Whilst it’s great news for travellers, operators may need to consider how this will impact on their network as they will be forced to deliver more bandwidth to more “virtual” customers. The addition of these roamers will add to the burden on the local network and could create unexpected demand for the local provider’s bandwidth. This will hold true particularly in areas which attract most tourist visitors or which are most visited by business travellers. In this way, operators may need to consider how to provision for this new demand and expand their current networks to provide the necessary broadband service, in the most cost effective way.”
