Berlin, September, 23, 2010 – Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld GmbH, the operating company of the new Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (BBI), and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced the deployment of a converged communications network to advance the safety and security of passengers traveling through the newly expanded airport.

The new communications network, which will be fully operational in May 2011, will integrate all voice and data communications, as well as security-related applications such as video surveillance and control center communications, on to a single IP/MPLS network to help BBI authorities provide passengers with improved safety and security and an enhanced travel experience.

“The new BBI airport is expected to accommodate up to 27 million passengers by 2011, with up to 45 million based on predicted growth. The new communications and network architecture provides us with a future-safe infrastructure that can be flexibly developed with the growth of the airport and allows meeting also the expectations of our customers,” said Dr. Manfred A. Körtgen, Managing Director Operations/BBI of Berliner Flughäfen.

The Alcatel-Lucent solution was selected after successful tests demonstrated high reliability and security capabilities, and the ability to integrate with required applications and operational systems, streamlining network management and reducing operating costs. The new network will be the first IP/MPLS deployment for an airport in Germany and will provide more than 17,000 IP ports for voice, video, data and WiFi access points while adding flexibility to respond to fast changing requirements as the airport grows.

“We are building a comprehensive mission-critical communications solution which will allow airport authorities to make travel easier and protect people and assets, all while reducing operating costs,” said Alf Henryk Wulf, Head of Alcatel-Lucent in Germany. “This is a strategic milestone in Germany for Alcatel-Lucent and demonstrates our global expertise as a reliable vendor and systems integrator in the transportation sector.”
