CommunicAsia and EnterpriseIT2012 staged yet another successful edition bringing ICT professionals from around the world under one roof. The 4-day event attracted a total of more than 35,000 trade attendees from around the world. The international trade attendees network, discussed current trends, witness technologies and solutions launches and gained insightful knowledge at the ICT platform.

Themed, “Better Quality of Life”, ITU’s second IPTV Application Challenge is inviting innovative IPTV solutions from individuals, small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and corporations to improve social welfare through services in fields such as e-health, e-government, e-learning, ICT accessibility and all aspects of Smart Living.

ITU calls for global collaboration to tackle cybersecurity threats
ITU today called for greater international co-operation between governments and the ICT industry to tackle the global nature of today’s cybersecurity threats. The recent discovery of the highly complex Flame malware by Kaspersky Lab reinforces the need for a co-ordinated response. Flame was discovered by Kaspersky Lab experts following a technical analysis requested by the ITU into an unknown piece of malware which was deleting sensitive information.

PageOne sees increased demand for paging ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games
PageOne Communications, the UK’s leading provider of mobile messaging solutions to the public and enterprise sectors, has seen an increase in demand for paging and messaging services among key organisations involved in the Games, including The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), who have selected PageOne and its 2-way Responder pagers to help diversify their communications offering for added resilience and security.

At the onset of the African Development Bank (AfDB)  Annual Meetings, its Chief Economist, Mthuli Ncube, announced a strategic partnership with Mobile Accord for the processing of mobile-based surveys throughout Africa.

Zain KSA selects Nokia Siemens Networks to deliver 4G for Jeddah, country’s second largest city
The Saudi Arabian operator Zain KSA has selected Nokia Siemens Networks as its LTE (4G) mobile broadband infrastructure and services vendor for Jeddah, the country’s second largest city. The operator aims to address the growing demand for mobile broadband and smartphone data services by refarming its 1800 MHz GSM frequency band to offer 4G services. As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will also manage Zain KSA’s 4G network in Jeddah, in addition to the operator’s existing GSM and 3G networks in the city.

America Movil partnership to connect millions to Opera Mini
Opera Software today announced that it has entered into a partnership with America Movil, the world’s third-largest mobile network provider, to bring the power of a faster mobile web to Latin America. Under this agreement, America Movil will bring a co-branded version of the Opera Mini mobile web browser to users across all its subsidiaries in Latin America.

Alcatel-Lucent’s Americas President Robert Vrij urges telecom operators to tap the “true value” of networks

Last week Alex Neill MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment, spoke at the NextGen Scotland conference hosted on 7 June by the Scottish government. The event outlined the country’s digital aspirations and announced more seed-funding for small community digital schemes in remote rural areas.

Symphonet Selects Calix for Advanced Broadband Services Roll-out in Malaysia
Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) has today announced that Malaysian communications service provider Symphonet Sdh Bhd (Symphonet) has chosen the Calix E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) for the roll-out of its new high speed broadband networks in Kuala Lumpur and Johore Bahru.

Kazakhstan spearheading future Internet in Central Asia
Celebrating World IPv6 Launch Day at the beginning of this month, Kazakhstan becomes the first Central Asian country to join the global deployment of the future Internet addressing system, known as IPv6. The growth of the web will now be able to continue unabated, with the new Internet Protocol allowing more users and devices to communicate on the Internet by providing a vastly bigger pool of IP addresses which were about to run out under the predecessor protocol IPv4.

ITU-IMPACT to hold Arab region cross-border cyber drill. First region-wide test of cybersecurity capabilities
Geneva, 29 June 2012 – ITU and its cybersecurity partner, the International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats (IMPACT), are organizing the first UN-backed cross border cyber drill designed to test the Arab region’s cyber response capabilities and improve readiness and reaction in the event of a theoretical future cyber attack.
