Alcatel-Lucent and CNT deploy Ecuador’s first 4G LTE ultra-broadband network

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), and Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) deploy the first 4G LTE high-speed mobile broadband network in Ecuador Covering the cities of Guayaquil, Cuenca, Machala and Loja, as well as most of the major cities in Ecuador´s Pacific Coast and Southern area.

Three Fishermen Survived from the Storm by Sending Distress Signal Through Two-way Radio

At the end of August, there was a strong storm that wrecked 90 miles inland from the town of Tonala which put three fishermen in danger. Fortunately, since equipped with DMR portable radio they were able to make distress signal by pressing the emergency button which allowed the Committee for Prevention and Citizen Participation of Puerto Arista to rescue them based on the global positioning system. The DMR portable they used turned out to be Hytera PD70XG.

Telecommunications Companies Struggle to Deliver B2C E-commerce Experience Their Customers Expect

When it comes to selling online, telecommunications organisations have to adapt to changing customer expectations, driven by trends such as smartphone usage, social media and the consumerisation of IT, according to the 2013 E-commerce Report from Intershop. Across the board, respondents in a survey of 400 B2B companies, of which 75% of the respondents were from the automotive, high-tech manufacturing, retail, pharmaceutical, and telecoms sectors, agreed that the world of B2B commerce is evolving fast, and B2C trends are reflected in the B2B environment.

Wearable Technology Grows in Popularity

A recent SSI survey found that wearable technology will become popular in mainstream markets within the next two to three years. The study showed one out of three people were “very” or “somewhat likely” to buy a wearable device.

More than 3,600 people from seven countries – Australia, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States – weighed in on their vision for the future and their interest in wearable computer devices. When asked to select what type of wearable computer device they were most interested in, people overwhelmingly listed wristbands (65 percent) as their first choice followed closely by glasses at 55 percent.

European Space Agency delivers its SuperSites Exploitation Platform on Interoute Virtual Data Centre

s part of its mission to support the scientific community and encourage better use of satellite data to monitor and track our planet, the European Space Agency (ESA) is developing a SuperSites Exploitation Platform (SSEP) on Interoute Virtual Data Centre. This new platform aims to enable the analysis and interpretation of large volumes of satellite data in order to better understand the processes causing geohazards such as earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Children using cloud computing technologies at school are at risk of privacy violations if they don’t receive special protection, according to a new survey of European data protection officials released today by SafeGov.org. The report was released to coincide with the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners, taking place this week in Warsaw.

UN Broadband Commission releases first global report on ‘broadband and gender’: 200 million fewer women online

A new report released today by the Broadband Commission Working Group on Broadband and Gender reveals a ‘significant and pervasive’ ‘tech gap’ in access to information and communication technologies (ICTs). Globally, the report estimates that there are currently 200 million fewer women online than men, and warns that the gap could grow to 350 million within the next three years if action is not taken.

Alcatel-Lucent extends microwave product leadership to help service providers meet the capacity crunch

Alcatel-Lucent is building on its leadership in microwave transmission technology with the addition to its portfolio of the ETSI-optimized 9500 Microwave Packet Radio (MPR) long-haul system.

The 9500 MPR long-haul system delivers more than eight times the capacity in a third of the footprint of traditional systems. As a result, it addresses demand for high-bandwidth, long-haul connectivity for both traditional and IP-based services, including IP video and 4G LTE, in Europe and in other parts of the world.
