Press Releases Wednesday 4 December Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs forecasts a 560% increase in data traffic on metro networks by 2017, driving a major shift in network design A Bell Labs study released today by Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) indicates that data traffic on metropolitan (‘metro’) access and aggregation networks is set to increase by 560 percent by 2017, driven by demand for video and the proliferation of data centers. Even more significantly, the study showed that by 2017 more than 75 percent of that traffic will stay in metro networks, as compared to 57 percent today. Twenty five thousand up – Fast-growing service for mobile workers hits major landmark WorkSnug, the fast-growing service which connects mobile workers to laptop friendly cafés, has hit 25,000 user reviews. Often described in the media as “a specialist Yelp”, WorkSnug is a reviews engine and set of tools for the modern day, laptop-toting road warrior. ITU achieves major breakthrough in audio standards Personalized’ audio systems for television and radio. Audio is an essential part of the television experience, as the quality and ‘perception’ of sound enhances the image on screen. Elizabeth Gooch recognised for Outstanding Contribution to Technology at West Midlands Women of the Year Awards 2013 Elizabeth Gooch, Founder and President of eg solutions, was last night awarded the prestigious ‘Outstanding Contribution to Technology’ award at the Annual West Midlands Women of the Year Awards 2013. Thursday 5 December OpenMarket powers mobile donations for record-breaking BBC Children in Need BBC Children in Need, who supports disadvantaged children and young people across the UK, is using mobile engagement company OpenMarket to drive mobile donations for its 2013 fundraising appeal. OpenMarket’s Mobile Engagement Platform is powering BBC Children in Need’s mobile donation channel, which began on October 7 2013 and will be open for donations until Midnight on January 31 2014. Monday 9 December Toolwire and Leeds Metropolitan University create industry’s first award winning immersive Learning tools Toolwire today announced that Leeds Metropolitan University has uniquely launched a series of virtual learning tools, allowing practitioners and students to interact, and experience real life situations on a range of complex and sensitive subject matters. The five new learning tools, which are the first of its kind in the UK education market, were developed in collaboration with Experiential Learning experts Toolwire. Thursday 12 December The World’s First DIN70121 Charging Spot Tester For the first time, the world has agreed globally on standards for electric vehicles and the corresponding charging infrastructure, test systems are required to ensure their interoperability for a successful roll-out. Auronik, akkuteam and Testing Technologies have partnered for the mission to develop a “golden device” for the validation of interoperability between electric vehicles and their supply equipment. The so-called Stressor series of e-mobility test systems is now being launched by its first product, the DC.chargeSTRESSOR – a conformance tester for direct current charging stations according to DIN70121 compliant communication. It facilitates manufacturers to develop standard compliant charging spots without the need of a real electric vehicle for testing purposes. Future products will cover testing of electric vehicle communication compliance as well as ISO15118 testing for direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) charging. Wednesday 18 December GSA confirms over 250 LTE networks now launched SA, the Global mobile Suppliers Association, confirmed today that 251 LTE networks in 93 countries are now commercially launched. The number of countries with LTE service has grown 45% this year. LTE service has been introduced to 29 new countries so far in 2013. China is the newest market following the commercial launch today by China Mobile of its LTE TDD (TD-LTE) network. Alan Hadden, President of the GSA, said: “Approaching half of the global total of LTE networks in service will have been launched during this year alone.” Thursday 19 December Netwrix Makes Password Management Free to Small Businesses Netwrix Corporation, the leading configuration auditing software vendor, today announced the availability of Netwrix Password Manager as a completely free offering to businesses with up to 100 users. This fully functional solution empowers users to self-service password issues, thereby reducing the burden on IT. “According to Forrester research, password management represents 30% to 50% of all IT help desk issues,” said Michael Fimin, Netwrix CEO. “Small companies are usually the last to adopt innovative technologies that automate time-consuming manual processes like password management. This 100-user version of Netwrix Password Manager will help them get repetitive tasks off the backs of IT support and reduce the costs of resolving password-related issues,” explained Fimin. Cross-platform social messaging apps are making social networking increasingly competitive The rise of cross-platform social messaging apps will increasingly threaten the influence and stickiness of conventional social networks in 2014 and beyond. It is a potentially transformative trend that will see increasing numbers of app developers looking to re-orientate their social integration strategies to facilitate messaging and content sharing with communities outside of Facebook, Twitter and other more established social networks. Friday 20 December New green ICT standards tackle e-waste and energy efficiency A meeting of ITU’s expert group on green ICT has resulted in new standards including an environmentally friendly universal charger for laptops as well as other portable devices (ITU-T L.1002), and a standard for green batteries for smart phones and other handheld ICT devices (ITU-T L.1010). Additionally experts have agreed on a standardised methodology for manufacturers to report the quantity of rare metals contained in their ICT devices (Recommendation ITU-T 1101) – something that will increase the efficiency of recycling schemes.
