Thursday 16 January European Commission focuses on IT education for young people The European Commission has released a series of videos to encourage school and university pupils to engage with IT and learn more about how concepts like cloud computing affect their everyday lives. The lack of computer skills amongst young people is damaging job prospects, and the videos are one of the initiatives to improve that situation. Friday 17 January Mobile World Congress 2014 to become World’s largest certified carbon neutral tradeshow GSMA Increases Environmental Commitment to Reducing Carbon Footprint, Pursues International Certification of Mobile World Congress as Carbon Neutral The GSMA today announced that the 2014 Mobile World Congress will be the world’s largest tradeshow certified to have a zero carbon footprint. The GSMA will certify Mobile World Congress as carbon neutral through the internationally recognised PAS 2060 standard; official certification will be awarded once the event is completed and official data on emissions can be obtained. Tuesday 21 January The Future Networked Car drives to the Geneva Motor Show An ITU international symposium, the ‘Future Networked Car’, will be held 5-6 March 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show. The free-of-charge, open-to-all event will host experts from the automotive and ICT fields to discuss the accelerating convergence within the two industry sectors set to introduce safer, more energy-efficient vehicles and intelligent transport systems (ITS). Thursday 23 January Dragonwave, GOGO enabling connectivity at 30,00 feet ragonWave Inc. (TSX: DWI; NASDAQ: DRWI) a leading global supplier of packet microwave radio systems for mobile and access networks, today announced it has been selected as a microwave solutions provider for backhaul connectivity as part of Gogo‘s ongoing expansion efforts. Gogo is a leading provider of in-flight services, having equipped more than 2,000 commercial aircraft and more than 6,500 business jets with its exclusive online solutions. The DragonWave Horizon Quantum and Horizon Compact+ radios offer the performance parameters for linking Gogo’s remote tower locations back into a wired network. Ooredoo donates to Indonesian flood relief effortsOoredoo and Indonesian operating company, Indosat, have this week both pledged emergency aid in support of disaster relief efforts to help Indonesian communities and people most affected by recent flooding. Recognising the importance of communicating freely during a crisis Indosat was the first provider to offer free access to its services to those affected. Following another unusually heavy rainy season, Manado in the country’s North Sulawesi region has been most impacted with other areas seriously affected by the floods including Jakarta, Bekasi and Subang. The total population affected by the floods is estimated to be 100,000 with this number expected to grow over coming weeks. In Manado, currently worst affected by the seasonal flooding, the floods have created 50,000 refugees and damaged thousands of houses in the area. Sadly, 19 people have also lost their life in the floods. Monday 27 January ITU experts explore ways forward in dynamic spectrum usage Key industry players, regulators, operators, manufacturers and research institutions gathered in Geneva at an ITU Workshop on White Spaces and Cognitive Radio Systems (CRS). ‘White Spaces’ refer to radiofrequencies which may be used at given times and locations without causing harmful interference to, or claiming protection from, incumbent radio services. CRS refer to a radio system capable of obtaining knowledge on its environment and dynamically adjusting its operational parameters accordingly in order to operate without causing harmful interference.Twenty five thousand up – Fast-growing service for mobile workers hits major landmark WorkSnug, the fast-growing service which connects mobile workers to laptop friendly cafés, has hit 25,000 user reviews. The trials included NSN’s enhanced Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (eSRVCC) solution for a seamless experience and optimized behavior.
