Facebook CEO defends WhatsApp buy; urges free internet access

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, said WhatsApp – as an independent business – is worth more than the $19 billion he agreed to pay for it.

WhatsApp to launch voice services

Over-The-Top (OTT) player WhatsApp has sent shockwaves through the mobile industry by announcing it will soon launch a voice service in addition to its widely used messaging application.

Alcatel-Lucent and Libya’s LITC to deploy new 1,000 km undersea cable system linking Tripoli to Benghazi

Technology offers hope for young Arabs

Eight out of 10 young people in the MENA region are optimistic about their prospects in the coming year, although 45 percent of employed young people are not doing the work they would like to do, according to a new study published today.

The extensive new online survey, ‘New Horizons: Young, Arab and Connected’, was commissioned by Ooredoo to provide a snapshot into the digital attitudes and aspirations of young people across the Middle East and North Africa. Surveying more than 10,500 young adults in 17 countries across the region, including 118 digitally connected youth in Oman, it is one of the most in-depth research projects on the subject yet undertaken, conducted during a period of intense social and political change.

Alcatel-Lucent passes milestone of 125 million Voice over IP licenses as 4G service providers drive to deploy Voice over LTE

Alcatel-Lucent has globally shipped more than 125 million Voice over IP subscriber licenses around the world as service providers meet demands for ultra-broadband access to converged voice, video, data and new applications.

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) subscriber licenses comprised the bulk of Alcatel-Lucent’s shipments, with more than 88 million licenses issued. With the deployment of VoLTE, operators will also be able to reduce operational costs by moving to an all IP network, free up precious spectrum to meet increasing demand for mobile broadband, and combine HD voice, video conferencing and data with the lightning speed of 4G LTE networks.

Alcatel-Lucent and Tunisie Telecom sign three-year agreement to extend ultra-broadband services throughout Tunisia

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Tunisie Telecom, the leading telecommunications provider in Tunisia, have today announced a three-year agreement to transform the carrier’s voice and data network, paving the way for ultra-broadband access services for residential and enterprise customers throughout Tunisia.

LTE powering forward, 274 operators launched in 101 countries says GSA

The latest update to the Evolution to LTE report from the GSA (Global mobile Suppliers Association) confirms that 274 LTE networks have commercially launched in 101 countries. 11 operators have commercially launched LTE services so far this year. 119 LTE operators commercially launched service on LTE networks in the past 12 months, more than 76% annual growth.

CCTV is the answer to reducing theft and increasing productivity in the restaurant industry

Owners and managers of restaurant chains, especially franchises, face many challenges including monitoring the many branches. This is time consuming and requires much travel. Furthermore, ensuring productivity of staff is in line with the establishment’s standards, which impacts service and customer satisfaction is difficult as it is impossible to be in more than one place at the same time. Another challenge is the ever-present issue of petty theft in the form of shrinkage, where stock such as food and drink seems to disappear. Monitoring multiple establishments as well as the different areas of a restaurant to ensure staff are doing their jobs and that they are not committing theft or consuming stock, requires many pairs of eyes on site.
