Trade Events

CommunicAsia, Singapore, 17-20 June 2014

 

Known as Asia’s largest integrated info-communications technology event, CommunicAsia and EnterpriseIT2014 ended positively with international trade attendees having the opportunity to network, witness the launch of several latest innovations, engage in business opportunities and gained insightful knowledge. The 4-day event which spans across 3 levels of Marina Bay Sands, Singapore attracted over 33,000 international trade attendees.

 

Trade attendees were also treated with 3 new thematic NXT Clusters – NXT Connected Services, NXT Enterprises and NXT Cities in the exhibition halls. The technology tours, enriching sessions such as Myanmar Connect and SME Day and exhibitors’ product demonstrations and insightful presentations at Studio NXT also drew favorable responses from the trade attendees.

 

Attendees were also able to experience the convergence of technologies effectively across the info communication, entertainment and broadcasting industries with BroadcastAsia2014 being held under one-roof on Level 4 & 5.

Millicom, Airtel and Zantel announce Africa’s first mobile money interoperability agreement Stockholm, 4 June, 2014 – The subsidiary of Millicom (Stockholmsbörsen: MIC) in Tanzania, Tigo, joined with Airtel and Zantel today to announce Africa’s first agreement to allow their customers in the country to send money to each other whether using Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money or EzyPesa on their mobile handsets. The service is expected to begin this month. This is the first agreement in Africa to adopt interoperable mobile money services, whereby one network allows another network’s customers to send money to its own clients

Ericsson mobility report: Mobile internet usage to increase at twice the global rate in five years in Sub-Saharan Africa

           Mobile internet use doubling year-on-year, with usage expected to increase 20 times in the next five years

           By 2017, 3G technology will outstrip 2G to become the region’s dominant form of mobile connection

           Ericsson predicts 930 million mobile subscriptions in Sub-Saharan Africa by the end of 2019, with 557m smartphone and 710m broadband subscriptions

The new advertising-supported system, which will be rolled out from today, is the first installment of a two-phase major upgrade, designed and operated by WIFI Metropolis.

Mobile Operators Present Initial 5G Requirements

The Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance presented end-to-end requirements for 5G at its NGMN Forum meeting in June. Leading global Operator, Vendor and Research representatives gathered to review the initial results of the Alliance’s 5G initiative and to give guidance on the way forward.

 

Earlier this year, the NGMN Board – CTOs from 20 leading international operators – had made the decision to focus the future NGMN activities on defining the end-to-end requirements for 5G in an industry White Paper. A unique, global initiative with a team of more than 100 experts is now working on the definition of these consolidated operator requirements intended to support the standardisation and subsequent availability of 5G from 2020.

NuRAN Wireless, a leading supplier of mobile and broadband wireless solutions, has been selected by Rhizomatica to connect Mexico’s rural communities. Rhizomatica is a non-profit organization based in Oaxaca, Mexico, whose mission is to enable access to mobile telecommunications for the over 2 billion people without affordable coverage and the 700 million with none at all. To this end, the organization thoroughly investigated ways to bring mobile connectivity to low-density, low-income, rural areas.

Gilat Utilizes Intelsat Satellite Services to Deliver Broadband Connectivity to Schools and Communities in Rural Colombia

Intelsat S.A. (NYSE: I), the world’s leading provider of satellite services, and Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. (NASDAQ: GILT), a worldwide leader in satellite networking technology, solutions and services, today announced a multi-year, multi-transponder agreement under which Gilat Colombia will use Intelsat Ku-band capacity on Intelsat 907 at 332.5° East to support the Kioscos Vive Digital 2 (KVDII) project.

 

KDVII provides connectivity to rural communities and schools in six regions within the framework of the Colombian Ministry’s national Kioscos Phase 2/VIVE DIGITAL project.  Gilat’s SkyEdge II WebEnhance was chosen to be used in four of these, including the regions serviced by Gilat Colombia. Under the agreement between the companies, Gilat Colombia will use Intelsat’s satellite services for the three year initiative. As part of the project, Gilat will integrate its SkyEdge II WebEnhance data networking platform with Intelsat’s satellite services to provide internet connectivity to 1,903 kiosks within rural communities located in Colombia.

Free WiFi major factor to economic recovery says IT entrepreneur

“Free WiFi can only be a good thing as we all do more messaging on the move. It reduces that irritating ‘downtime’ when we are commuting and help to alleviate some of the stress commuters feel from not using their time productively,” said Gary David Smith – co-founder of Prism Solutions.

 

“This initiative has helped people to balance their working day. When they get to the office they will be able to concentrate on their specific tasks and not just the sorting and replying to messages,” said Mr Smith – whose company supplies complete IT support to over 1,000 SME’s nationwide.

 

Is it time for African insurers to review their mobile strategies?

In a report by Juergen Weiss based on the Gartner 2013 Global CIO survey, it is predicted that by 2015 at least 40% of the currently existing insurance-related, customer-facing mobile applications will be abandoned due to lack of demand. The reason for this low adoption is down to two main facts –  that insurers have not designed their applications in a way that makes consumers want to use them and secondly, that consumers are simply not aware when these apps are available.
