Samsung unveils Galaxy S6 smartphones and Samsung Pay

Samsung unveiled its latest flagship devices last night in Barcelona, with its Galaxy S6 joined by Galaxy S6 edge – a smartphone with a curved display on both sides.

 

Mozilla teams with operators on new Firefox device range

Mozilla lined up with leading operators KDDI, LG U+, Telefonica and Verizon Wireless on what it’s billing as a new category of Firefox OS phones, with a planned launch date of 2016.

Zuckerberg makes case for free mobile data; operators cautious

Mark Zuckerberg told delegates at Mobile World Congress (MWC) that offering free basic internet services can help mobile operators grow their businesses faster in emerging markets.

 

A “future-ready” processing platform for the intelligent gateway.

AMD is focused on an IoT gateway solution to pave the way for mission-critical connectivity and offering integration of multi-protocol networking, enterprise grade security, and applications integration.

FCC chief defends net neutrality rules

Speaking in the Mobile World Live keynote last night, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Tom Wheeler defended the agency’s use of decades-old regulatory tools in putting together its new net neutrality rules.

 

EU digital chief hails collaborative 5G effort

EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger said that Europe’s authorities have a crucial role in driving the continent’s 5G efforts, and that “without the 5G Public-Private Partnership, without the European Commission to moderate the process, and without the Horizon 2020 funding, Europe would not stand a chance to even be part of the game”.

5G a “special generation” – but in good time

The mobile industry should consider 5G as a “special generation”, introducing “challenges in all layers of the technology”, Mike Short, VP of public affairs Telefónica Europe, said.

 

Bell Labs chief shuns 5G hype

Bell Labs president Marcus Weldon, who is also CTO of Alcatel-Lucent, poured scorn on competitors’ “ridiculous marketing” of 5G, refusing to be sucked into the game of headline-speed announcements.

ITU deploys emergency communication equipment in Vanuatu

ITU deployed emergency telecommunication equipment to Vanuatu following the devastation caused by Cyclone Pam, a category 5 tropical storm which hit the archipelago on Friday, 13 March.

 

ITU dispatched 40 satellite phones, ten Broadband Global Area Network terminals and 35 solar panels to the Island nation to support relief coordination efforts.

 

“The frequency and intensity of disasters is increasing worldwide with a disproportionate impact on developing countries,” said ITU Secretary General Houlin Zhao. “We are working with our partners to increase the capacity of Member States to integrate ICTs in their disaster risk reduction policies. ITU is also encouraging governments, especially those in developing countries, to invest in telecommunication infrastructure that is resilient to disasters.”

Making the ‘Internet of Things’ more private and secure? Researchers from iMinds – KU Leuven say that using open source software is key Net Futures (Brussels) – 26 March, 2015. Experts from iMinds – KU Leuven have urged the audience of the Net Futures 2015 conference to rethink the architecture of the Internet of Things (IoT). In pursuit of a more private and secure IoT, they recommend avoiding the unnecessary centralization of massive amounts of data and strongly suggest to use open source software, as this allows for more thorough and transparent fault checks and bug reporting.

Chinese Broadcasters Sue Pirates in USA Hong Kong, March 19, 2015: CASBAA – the Association of the Asia-Pacific Pay-TV industry – today welcomed press reports that Chinese-language television broadcasters had filed suit in US courts against companies promoting and selling a brand of streaming media boxes targeted at receiving large amounts of pirated TV programming.1 The suit was filed last Friday in Federal court in California by TVB from Hong Kong, CCTV from mainland China, and Dish-TV, a U.S. satellite television provider that carries legitimately authorized programming from many countries.
