Representing every facet of the ecosystem, more than 2,200 companies participated in our 2016 exhibition, which spanned nine halls and one dozen outdoor spaces at Fira Gran Via and Fira Montjuïc. Everything from virtual reality, new handsets and ingenious app ideas, to 3D printing, privacy protection and backend solutions were on display. The motto for this year’s MWC? “Mobile Is Everything.”

  • Down at the GSMA Innovation City, attendees could see first-hand how mobile-connected products are transforming our personal and working lives. Special thanks to AT&T, Jasper, KT Corporation and Sierra Wireless for partnering with the GSMA to showcase products and solutions that are changing the way the world communicates.
  • Attendees were fascinated learning about new technology: the remarkable substance called graphene joined our lineup of specialty exhibition pavilions in 2016, alongside Mobile Health, NFC, Apps, Green Technology, IoT, and Wearables.
  • Nearly 40 countries and territories from around the world showcased innovative companies and ideas from their citizens in dedicated Country Pavilions.
  • We introduced MWC Tours in 2016, which offered guided exhibition tours led by industry experts, covering topics such as 5G & NFV, mobile apps, retail & digital commerce, mobile media, IoT and security.

Highlights [examples]

1. 50 Billion Connected ‘Things’ by 2020

During their keynote, Intel provided a forecast on the growth of connected devices. This will be accelerated by the increasing adoption of the Internet of Things — for an example of where IoT could be going, look no further than ZTE’s recently announced range of jewelry.

2. 78.1 Million Wearables Shipped in 2015

That’s an incredible 172% more than in 2014. IDC released this figure at the last day of MWC, highlighting the growing interest for these new devices as sales reached 27 Million units in Q4 2015. Top vendors include Fitbit, Apple, Xiaomi, Samsung and Garmin.

3. Samsung officially announced the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge to the world.

While the latest members of the Galaxy S family have a lot in common with the Galaxy S6 series, a slightly refined design and the return of microSD, as well as water and dust resistance, make the new Galaxy S7 family very welcome upgrades over their predecessors. Under the hood you’ll find equally impressive specs, with a Snapdragon 820 or an Exynos 8 Octa, depending on the market.

4. The MWC IoT (Internet of Things) Tour

The Internet of Things (IoT) is already here, from connected cars that monitor driver behavior and performance, wearables that quantify personal health and wellness, to refrigerators that compile shopping lists in real-time. Over the next eighteen months, millions of new devices will be connected, interacting with each other, creating new business models, and changing people’s lives..
