Attendees benefited from high-level networking opportunities with new carriers and service providers in Indochina, and international carriers active across the region; and gained detailed insight into the Asia-Pacific wholesale telecoms market with interactive panel sessions. There were valuable meetings with over 400 senior-level executives to grow one’s business; notably; Asian carriers in key markets including: Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. Tuesday 6 November Ministry of Defence starts to adopt the Cloud Skyscape Cloud Services Limited, the easy to adopt, easy to use and easy to leave Assured Cloud Services Company, today announced that it had signed a contract with the MoD for the hosting of their GEMS Online system. The Infrastructure as a Service contract was awarded via the G-Cloud Framework, which enables the rapid sourcing and deployment of secure, low cost utility services to the UK public sector. Hibernia Atlantic named accredited connectivity partner (ACP) by London Stock Exchange Group Hibernia Atlantic, a provider of global capacity services, announces today it has been named an Accredited Connectivity Partner (ACP) by London Stock Exchange Group, operator of a broad range of international equity, bond and derivatives markets. The partnership is an integral part of London Stock Exchange Group’s new connectivity service, Customer Managed Connectivity (CMC), which will allow customers direct access to its markets through the Accredited Connectivity Partners. Thursday 8 November Sony and HTC overtake RIM and Nokia in smart phones Asia Pacific accounted for over 50% of the smart phone market for the first time since 2006, with Asian vendors rising Monday 12 November Vodacom Chooses Intelsat for Cellular Backhaul Deployment in Africa Intelsat S.A., the world’s leading provider of satellite services, announced today a new multi-year capacity agreement with South African-based Vodacom on the Intelsat satellite fleet. Vodacom will utilize capacity on Intelsat 906 at 64° East and Intelsat 25 at 328.5° East to support its deployment of cellular backhaul service in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Vodacom is currently implementing its 3G network across the DRC. This agreement expands the Intelsat-based cellular backhaul infrastructure supporting wireless services in Tanzania, Mozambique and other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. Tuesday 13 November Alcatel-Lucent and Angola Cables connect Southern Africa and the global community through a superfast data link Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Angola Cables, a consortium of Angolan telecommunications operators, are to dramatically expand the availability of high-speed Internet access and data services throughout Angola and to the rest of world. MTN South Africa selects Celcite COPS to support network optimisation efficiency Celcite Management Solutions (www.celcite.com), the world’s leading provider of automatic optimisation tools and services for wireless networks, announced today that cellular operator MTN South Africa has adopted Celcite’s COPS™-AIC software solution, as a service, towards maximising optimisation of its growing 2G and 3G networks. Wednesday 14 November Pressure on Government over Intellectual Property & Cyber Squatting In today’s knowledge-driven society, intellectual assets, including designs, brands, patents, software and concepts are now arguably the most valuable property that this country has to protect. That’s why there are increasing calls for a shake-up of the way intellectual property is dealt with by the government. Thursday 15 November Telefonica and Microsoft to Deploy New Global Video Platform elefonica Digital and Microsoft Corp. today announced a multiyear strategic agreement to create a new Global Video Platform (GVP) for all video entertainment services across Telefonica’s Operating Businesses. Based on key Microsoft technologies including the Microsoft Mediaroom platform, the GVP is unique in delivering TV services over both managed (IPTV) and nonmanaged (“over the top”) networks, at global scale, to a range of consumer devices. The first GVP deployments are taking place in Brazil, Chile and Spain, and Telefonica anticipates extending the deployment of TV services based on the GVP to a number of its other Operating Businesses over the next few years. Monday 19 November Nokia Siemens Networks, Ballard Power Systems develop fuel cell backup power for mobile networks Nokia Siemens Networks is working with Ballard Power Systems, Inc. to develop mobile networks that can continue to operate during power blackouts. Japanese operator NTT DOCOMO has evaluated the Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio base station site offering with integrated fuel cell* backup for potential commercial deployment. The solution has been installed at a DOCOMO R&D Center test site in Japan’s Yokosuka Research Park (YRP). Tuesday 20 November Calls for ITU to lead cross-sector ICT standardization Meeting at yesterday’s Global Standards Symposium (GSS-12, 19 November) government ministers, private-sector executives and the standardization community urged ITU to create standardization mechanisms to serve the needs of ‘vertical markets’ that are becoming increasingly dependent on information and communication technologies (ICTs). In addition, participants encouraged ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) to provide leadership in driving standards education and ICT innovation in developing countries. Wednesday 21 November GSMA and Deloitte release comprehensive research into the impact of mobile telephony on economic growth Today the GSMA and Deloitte released the first comprehensive assessment of the incremental benefits of next-generation mobile telephony services, such as 3G technology and mobile data services, and their impact on economic growth.
