BTC REMOVES INTER-ISLAND ROAMING CHARGES

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC), Cable & Wireless Communications’ business in The Bahamas, has removed charges for calls between the country’s 29 islands.

While normal airtime charges still apply, mobile customers are now able to make calls to a fixed line or mobile in another island without incurring an additional US 18 cents per minute ‘long-distance’ charge.

BTC is the only mobile operator in The Bahamas, and holds exclusivity over the supply of mobile services until 2014. Cable & Wireless Communications purchased 51% of the shares in BTC and took management control on 6 April 2011.

Cable & Wireless Communications has committed to preparing BTC for mobile competition in 2014 by improving service and introducing new technology including 4G (HSPA+) mobile services, eight megabits per second broadband and a focus on customer care.

Geoff Houston, Chief Executive Officer of BTC said:

“The removal of long distance charges for island-to-island cellular calls is one of the promises made as part of our commitment to improve customer service while reducing rates. These new mobile upgrades are just the beginning of exciting changes we plan to implement in the months and years ahead.”
