By the end of 2016, there were only 101.7 million lines of fixed telephony in Latin
America, representing almost five million (5%) less than those recorded in 2012. However,
the largest drop was in revenues: in 2016, fixed telephony accounted for US $ 15.5
million which represents 48% less than in 2012.
Furthermore, Dataxis predicts that fixed telephony revenues in 2022 will fall to US $ 10.4
million.
On the other hand, multi-service packages and double-play and triple-play competition by
Cable TV MSOs has been a mitigating factor in the fall of fixed telephone lines. In 2016,
fixed telephony via cable TV systems reached 14.4 million lines, representing 14.2% of
the market. According to Dataxis research, in 2022, the current cable TV operators
will reach 20.1 million telephone lines which represents 21.3% of the total market.
