DeLorme Introduces inReach Satellite Communicator to Aviation Community at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2012

First Affordable Two-Way Communication Device Provides Reliable Communication Capabilities for Pilots Anywhere in the World

YARMOUTH, Maine – July 23, 2012 – DeLorme, the innovation leader in personal satellite tracking, messaging and navigation technology, is presenting the inReach two-way satellite communicator to the world’s largest gathering of aviation pilots, owners and enthusiasts at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2012.

inReach is the first affordable satellite communicator with two-way personal text messaging, message delivery confirmation, SOS alerting and remote GPS real-time Flight Following/Ping-Me Locating. The inReach device also interfaces wirelessly with Android and Apple smartphones. The device is compact, lightweight, waterproof, floatable, and impact-resistant and it can maintain satellite signal lock even in difficult GPS environments.

inReach operates over the Iridium satellite network, providing truly global two-way satellite communications, high network reliability and low-latency data links (less than 60 second delivery of messages end-to-end) anywhere on Earth, even in areas outside of traditional cellular coverage.

The two-way communication features of inReach allow aircraft pilots to stay connected via text messages and email while flying routes beyond cell phone range. It can be used in stand-alone mode to send pre-loaded text messages, trigger SOS alerts, receive delivery confirmation, and enable tracking, all from the pushbutton and LED interface.

The real-time Flight Tracking feature of inReach provides GPS position updates allowing family and friends to follow the user’s trip as it happens. Followers can access the secure web portal application anywhere internet is available to track inReach users. Standard commercial service plans provide 10-minute tracking and aviation service plans are available with Automatic Flight Following at 2-minute intervals. In the event of an emergency, the built-in SOS button can be activated to trigger a distress alert with delivery confirmation and it automatically activates the remote GPS tracking feature. Flight tracking assists search-and-rescue personnel with homing in on the user’s location, whether stationary or on the move.

“inReach puts the power of global two-way personal communication, SOS alerting and remote tracking in the cockpit and right at the pilot’s fingertips, no matter where their flight plans may take them,” said Patrick Shay, DeLorme vice president and general manager. “This reinforces DeLorme’s commitment to providing affordable safety and communication solutions to users across a diverse range of market segments, including the aviation community.”

DeLorme is showcasing inReach in Booth 4066 at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2012. inReach devices will be available for purchase through select retailers onsite during the show.
