The idea behind O-RAN is to re-shape the RAN industry towards more intelligent, open, virtualized and fully interoperable mobile networks. O-RAN is not just about getting RAN network functions (NFs) to communicate with one another, it extends both up and down the solution stack. Disaggregation of this entire solution stack will allow for interoperability and customer choice between IT hardware, cloud platforms, automation tools and orchestration soft- ware. Ultimately, this allows for regional and vertical customization that isn’t available if everybody uses the same locked in design.
